19 August 2014 By Alan Straton

After notifying our premium listing clients of our recent updates to the business directory we received this note from Mignonne: Dear Friends, Thank you very much for your excellent service, and the initiative you take to keep MyPE so relevant. Since making use of your advertising facilities, we had the best response in our 28 years of being a pre-school. The small amount that is paid to you each month is worth every single cent.... our totally full school is proof of this. With … [Read more...] about Stuff that makes us SMILE

I am Such a Hypocrite – Why MyPE is Like Facebook

8 August 2012 By Alan Straton

My disdain for Vleisboek is well known and basically based on the fact that Facebook is a Walled Garden - you have to have an account to see stuff and a lot of the content is denied to the search engines. In addition Facebook own all the images and content you post PLUS they make money out of your content and images. I suppose Facebook is a bit like a casino where the punters bring the stock and conveniently leave it behind when they lose. See the MyPE Facebook page - be nice. But, back to … [Read more...] about I am Such a Hypocrite – Why MyPE is Like Facebook

New Improved Search Aids on MyPE

17 January 2012 By Alan Straton

MyPE Business Directory displaying Favicon Images

Search results in the MyPE Business Directory will now show an image next to each for a number of the results. "Why should I give a damn?" I hear you ask. Simply because each of those images is dynamically loaded, in real time and directly from the web site of each of those businesses listed and this, in itself, is an indicator that the business web site in question is live and CURRENT. Try this search to see what I mean: http://www.mype.co.za/cgi-bin/search.cgi?keywords=MyPE … [Read more...] about New Improved Search Aids on MyPE

Become Mommy’s Greek God Again

5 October 2011 By Alan Straton

Whisky and Cigar

Do you go to Facebook looking for an Electrician? Thought not. Social media is definitely a great problem solver but, like a telephone, you have to know who you are gonna ask. In the middle of the night your pipes burst or your distribution board blows plunging you into the terror of a cold or no shower in the morning. You immediately climb onto Facebook and Twitter whilst your wife mumbles; "He never asks for directions and now this ........" The plaintive plea for assistance to find an … [Read more...] about Become Mommy’s Greek God Again

It is Finally Happening

30 August 2011 By Alan Straton

And I can attest to the fact that everything people say about Port Elizabeth business being 'different' is true. The late Hilton Shorrock and I started MyPE in 2006 as a 'bit of fun' with a serious long term goal to stay relevant and provide effective advertising for local business. Since that time we certainly proved MyPE's relevance and attracted loyal and fanatical supporters to MyPE, along the way successfully avoiding the temptation to sell out to a number of offers along with the … [Read more...] about It is Finally Happening

Call to Boycott Port Elizabeth’s Community Media

23 August 2011 By Alan Straton

The 'letter' below is from a disgruntled person who has been seeking free advertising in a manner that is not conducive to getting myself and, obviously, other media instances to 'comply'. My comments are below this letter from Mark Rose Christie. Feel free to comment when you have waded through the hissing of cats, tossing of manes, hands on hips posturing and flexing of 'guns'..... Dear Sirs/Mesdames We have approached you, because we think it is high time that one of the Port Elizabeth … [Read more...] about Call to Boycott Port Elizabeth’s Community Media

How a Productive Genius uses the MyPE Directory

3 May 2011 By Alan Straton

The one GOOD THING about getting out from behind my desk and making like a Mole hitting sunlight is that I get to interact with many clever people. Of course I am a little narrow minded as, for me, clever people are only those that read and use MyPE. At a recent financial wellness breakfast (what a clever and devious choice of words that was on the part of the organisers!) a MyPE reader reminded me of why the Business Directory makes such sense for him. Every time that our clever friend, … [Read more...] about How a Productive Genius uses the MyPE Directory

Business Confidence Down in February

3 March 2011 By Alan Straton

South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry

The Business Confidence Index (BCI) in February 2011 contracted, the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACCI) said on Thursday. The BCI contracted to 86.4 from 87.4 in December 2010 and was 3.4 index points higher in February 2011 than in February 2010. "Despite this month's contraction, upward momentum was considered not to have been lost and it is believed that the BCI will continue its path to recovery since the trough in business confidence in the first quarter of 2009," … [Read more...] about Business Confidence Down in February

THIS is What is Meant by the Term ‘Link Love’

22 February 2011 By Alan Straton

On all the millions of web sites around the world - not including those pseudo Facebook and Twitter 'sites' - the competition to get good organic rankings on Google, Yahoo, Bing and the other search engines and directories is tough. One of the ranking factors used by Google to determine whether a web site appears on the front page of results, or is buried in la la land on page 2 or worse, is the number of sites pointing back to the site in question. These links are variously called backlinks, … [Read more...] about THIS is What is Meant by the Term ‘Link Love’

Interesting if you like Numbers

15 February 2011 By Alan Straton

As part of the new look MyPE I have begun to use Google Analytics to track visitors to the site. Initially I only installed the tracking code in the news section (which is the new section) and have just finished installing the code to a section of the Business Directory. Over the next couple of weeks the Google Analytics code will be added to the existing Gallery and the Classifieds. Yesterday's visitor figures to the news section were quite high, ending at 2 919 visits and mainly as a … [Read more...] about Interesting if you like Numbers

More Lambs to the Bitch Slapping Fest

14 January 2011 By Alan Straton

You would think that mature adults would stop and think before just using a form to send unsolicited marketing messages. Yesterday we had a local Port Elizabeth business trying to sell software to businesses listed in the MyPE Directory. Today I came across someone trying to peddle "Kick you in the Shin Classes". Now Bruce Lee and I are tight and my mate Julie down at Julies Pub is known to kick off her shoes and do a little bit of Martial Arts so undeterred I enquired from this spammer … [Read more...] about More Lambs to the Bitch Slapping Fest

Why You Want to do Work for ME

12 January 2011 By Alan Straton

Every day of our lives we sell; ourselves to our bosses, wives, children and friends; our products to clients; our ideas to investors; our souls to the devil ...... As youngsters on the prowl for a mate every interaction with others is a sales opportunity - the toss of your hair, sucking in of your stomach, puffing of your chest, wetting of your lips, secret glimpse of forbidden skin and flashing cash are all sales techniques that we unconsciously employ/ed. Selling is all about showing a … [Read more...] about Why You Want to do Work for ME
