As part of the new look MyPE I have begun to use Google Analytics to track visitors to the site.
Initially I only installed the tracking code in the news section (which is the new section) and have just finished installing the code to a section of the Business Directory. Over the next couple of weeks the Google Analytics code will be added to the existing Gallery and the Classifieds.
Yesterday’s visitor figures to the news section were quite high, ending at 2 919 visits and mainly as a result of this article: Can You Even Begin to Imagine This Rhino’s Pain?.
In the course of my analysing just what contributed to the appreciable spike in visitors to the MyPE news section I discovered that Google Analytics breaks down the visits by city as well and was pleasantly surprised to see that 1 026 of those 2 919 visits were from Port Elizabeth.
Now – this is where I need to explain that the Google Analytics figure of 1 026 visits from Port Elizabeth are not 100% accurate for the reason that not all people indicate in their Google Accounts exactly where they reside, so the number could be much higher. For example, delving deeper into the report revealed 7 visits from Walmer, 3 visits from Uitenhage and NONE from Despatch – come on guys, I know you have telephones at least!
Topping the foreign cities lists are these – visitor numbers for 14 February in brackets:
- London (14)
- Cologne (13)
- Perth (12)
- Los Angeles (8)
- Wellington (5)
What does this prove, if anything?
MyPE appears to have succeeded completely by sticking to the brief of serving Port Elizabeth residents diligently and faithfully.
Things will get interesting once the Google Analytics Code is up and working on all the Port Elizabeth Business Directory and Port Elizabeth Classifeds pages as well.
Contact Janine to advertise for next to nothing on Port Elizabeth’s de facto community web site, MyPE.
