Nelson Mandela Metropole Business Confidence Indicator – YTD January 2012

6 March 2012 By Alan Straton

NMBBCI YTD January 2012

For the past six months the NMB BCI has largely moved sideways but with a slight weakening trend beginning to emerge in the trend cycle of the index. It will, however, require more data going forward to confirm this apparent slowing taking place in the index. While ongoing real concerns regarding global economic stability and growth continue, particularly with regard to the Eurozone, where, inter alia, the emergence of recessionary conditions have contributed to the reduction of the growth … [Read more...] about Nelson Mandela Metropole Business Confidence Indicator – YTD January 2012

NMBBCI February 2012

The NMBBCI reflected only marginal improvement during 2011 with the index in December 2011 only some 3 percent up on the January 2011 level. Furthermore during the closing four month period of the year between September and December 2011, the index reflected uncertain performance and largely moved sideways during this period. To receive the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Confidence Index (formerly the Port Elizabeth Business Confidence Index) compiled by Dr Neil Bruton of RGT Smart Ltd, contact … [Read more...] about Nelson Mandela Metropole Business Confidence Indicator – YTD February 2012

Nelson Mandela Metropole Business Confidence Indicator – YTD October 2011

29 November 2011 By Alan Straton

October 2011 NMBBCI

The NMB BCI continued reflecting slow improvement through October supported predominantly by the unexpectedly robust performance of the new vehicle markets over the August to October period, being of particular importance to the local economy, ongoing slow growth in the real value of retail sales in the Eastern Cape, and growth in the trend cycles of the real value of both imports and exports during the period. Supported by steady growth in real disposable income of households the demand side … [Read more...] about Nelson Mandela Metropole Business Confidence Indicator – YTD October 2011

Nelson Mandela Metropole Business Confidence Indicator – YTD September 2011

28 October 2011 By Alan Straton

NMBCI September 2011

After reflecting slow decline during the past couple of months the trend in the NMBBCI recovered slightly in September being supported during the month by unexpectedly strong demand for both new cars in the metro and the total new car market in the country. Improved performance in retail sales in the Eastern Cape and some slight improvement in the underlying trend in the real values of both imports and exports also assisted the index. Despite significant volatility on financial markets the … [Read more...] about Nelson Mandela Metropole Business Confidence Indicator – YTD September 2011

Nelson Mandela Metropole Business Confidence Indicator – YTD August 2011

27 September 2011 By Alan Straton

NMBBCI August 2011

As expected the trend in the NMB BCI continued declining slowly through August coming under pressure from a range of weaker indicators while receiving some minimal support from the new car market in the Metro, the total national new vehicle market, and real retail sales in the Eastern Cape. While the dramatic volatility on global equity and currency markets in September, coming as a result of a sharp deterioration in both the performance and outlook for the economies of the US and EU, … [Read more...] about Nelson Mandela Metropole Business Confidence Indicator – YTD August 2011

Re-Transnet

11 September 2011 By Alan Straton

For me, Thursday was a day of contrasts. It started with a breakfast at La-Colline, hosted by Transnet which was followed by lunch at Ginger Restaurant, hosted by FNB. At the outset I need to say that my 'relationship' with Transnet has always been one of wary, at a distance, observation. I can personally attest to spending many years of sweat, toil and cash as a result of certain dirty Transnet clients within the Port Elizabeth harbour. But, on the positive side, being told by security; "We … [Read more...] about Re-Transnet

Nelson Mandela Metropole Business Confidence Indicator – YTD July 2011

31 August 2011 By Alan Straton

After a number of months of sideways movement the NMB BCI has begun declining slowly, under pressure from a declining pace of economic activity both in South Africa and in the major western economies. In both the US and the EU growth rates have slowed sharply and financial markets have contracted substantially discounting the possibility of the emergence of renewed global financial crisis on the back of slower rates of economic growth and sovereign debt concerns in circumstances where the … [Read more...] about Nelson Mandela Metropole Business Confidence Indicator – YTD July 2011

Nelson Mandela Metropole Business Confidence Indicator – YTD June 2011

26 July 2011 By Alan Straton

Over the past five months the NMB BCI has largely moved sideways reflecting little growth momentum. The development in the BCI is in line with more subdued levels of economic activity during the second quarter of 2011 which appears to have continued into the beginning of the third quarter of the year. To receive the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Confidence Index (formerly the Porth Elizabeth Business Confidence Index) compiled by Dr Neil Bruton of RGT Smart Ltd, contact the Nelson Mandela Bay … [Read more...] about Nelson Mandela Metropole Business Confidence Indicator – YTD June 2011

Nelson Mandela Metropole Business Confidence Indicator – YTD May 2011

25 June 2011 By Alan Straton

As highlighted in May the most recent monthly trend cycle data for the NMB BCI continues to suggest a consolidation in the rate of growth of economic activity in the Metro. While not as yet indicating a decline in the NMB BCI, the performance of key indicators such as new car sales in the Metro, the local rate of inflation and a decline in consumer confidence are beginning to suppress the performance of the index. To receive the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Confidence Index (formerly the … [Read more...] about Nelson Mandela Metropole Business Confidence Indicator – YTD May 2011
