Newton Park pool debacle just the tip of the iceberg!

23 April 2013 By Port Elizabethan

Dear Sir The sad and embarrassing debacle that hit the Metro last week with the fiasco surrounding the SA Swimming Nationals can only be blamed on the ruling party in this Metro, the ANC. They must take full responsibility for the mismanagement of this wonderful sporting facility, as they decide on cadre deployment, budgets, priorities and planning. It is all very well to say no person is to blame, and "we will do everything to ensure that this does not happen again", but the sad reality … [Read more...] about Newton Park pool debacle just the tip of the iceberg!

Naughty Newton Park

Green Newton Park Pool

So my mate Richard tells me: "Just got back from the swimming pool where I was trying to find out the race schedule for tonight but they're barring media access to the place and the gatekeeper couldn't/wouldn't tell me anything. There was a pool technician in the parking lot who confirmed the chlorine was at acceptable levels but that the organisers wanted it lowered."   … [Read more...] about Naughty Newton Park

Urgent report requested for Newton Park Swimming Pool

17 April 2013 By Port Elizabethan

It is beyond doubt that this incident is a direct result of equipment failure. What we need to know is why the equipment failed in order to prevent future incidents of this nature from occurring. Whether or not we will be able to rescue the damage done to the city’s reputation as a water sports destination is another matter. I have today written to the Chairperson of the Sports Arts Recreation and Culture committee requesting an urgent report to be tabled at our meeting next week. I … [Read more...] about Urgent report requested for Newton Park Swimming Pool

Newton Park Pool – Green with Envy?

16 April 2013 By Port Elizabethan

Green Newton Park Pool

The Newton Park swimming pool turned green on Monday disrupting the competition schedule and causing difficulties for swimmers due to poor visibility. South Africa's top swimmers, including Roland Schoeman, are competing in this event and are forced to swim in unfavourable conditions. Schoeman is quoted as saying the water condition had "profound effects on swimmers aiming for qualifying times". It is likely that lack of maintenance and inadequate budget provision are the causes of an … [Read more...] about Newton Park Pool – Green with Envy?

3rd Avenue Dip to Remain Closed

30 October 2012 By NMB Communications

The level of the Baakens River has now subsided sufficiently to allow engineers to assess any infrastructural damage caused to the road at the Third Avenue dip. Only after a full assessment by its engineers will the Municipality be able to plan and undertake repairs. It should be emphasised that it is not envisaged that the Third Avenue Dip will be opened to motorists soon. The Municipality appreciates the vital importance of the Third Avenue dip for the smooth flow of traffic in the area and … [Read more...] about 3rd Avenue Dip to Remain Closed

Curtains and Linens

It's been 90 years since Curtains & Linens have opened their doors and owners, Mr and Mrs. Pumplun, are intent on keeping these doors open for many more years to come! This renowned business began in the 1920's in Somerset East as Levin Brothers General Wholesalers. The business then planted its roots in Evatt Street, Port Elizabeth in the 1940's. Port Elizabeth Fires Rage

30 January 2012 By Alan Straton

20120130 Overbaakens Fire

Stop for a moment and think logically about the fires in Port Elizabeth. Think about how stretched our emergency services are whilst attending to four raging fires across the width and breadth of Port Elizabeth. Not only do the Fire and Emergency Services have to try and put the fires out but the Traffic Police have to provide support services to try and stop rubber necking yobs from placing themselves in danger. My eyes were opened a little bit today, when I tried to get a little closer to … [Read more...] about Port Elizabeth Fires Rage

The upgraded Newton Park Swimming Pool precinct and the restored Pearson Conservatory scooped Awards of Merit at the recent Eastern Cape Institute of Architects held awards ceremony. Under general impressions, the esteemed panel of judges stated that: "A considerable number of submissions of varying size and scope were received (31 in total - probably more than in recent years) with the larger proportion from beyond Port Elizabeth's borders. Meet Anti Fracking Leaders Derek Light and Dougie Stern

20 September 2011 By Alan Straton

Shell are wanting to frack the Karoo for gas. What this means is that thousands of square kilometres of land in the Karoo will be littered with gas drills. These drills use millions of litres of water each time they are "fracked" and this is about the least off our worries. Thousands of litres of highly toxic chemicals are also pumped into each well and are pumped into the ground to a depth of about 5km. What does this mean to you or me? The gases which are emitted from the wells are highly … [Read more...] about Meet Anti Fracking Leaders Derek Light and Dougie Stern
