The Joint Operations Centre, operating from the Disaster Management Centre of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, will operate 24 hours as flood warnings are still in place.
The South African Weather Service predicts that heavy rain can be expected from 20h00 tonight and issued warnings of localized flooding and river basin flooding to the public.
Constant monitoring of lower lying areas is in place and residents are requested to steer clear of water masses and to avoid crossing bridges in these areas.
Residents are warned that the barriers at closed roads must not be tampered otherwise stringent fines will be enforced.
As at 17h00 on Wednesday 8 June the only road closed is the Newton Park Third Avenue Dip.
Hoax e-mail
Currently a hoax e-mail is doing the rounds claiming that the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Joint Operations Centre instructed residents to leave to work stations. This is not true since heavy rain is now only expected later tonight.
