The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is working around the clock to make sure that the quality of water in the Newton Park Swimming Pool, where the South African National Aquatic Championships are being held, is restored to normal.
This follows an incident during which a pipe unexpectedly burst, causing pollution in the water, which resulted in the cancellation of the Championships Programme for Monday 15 April 2013.
Municipal pool officials were on the scene on Monday to repair the pipe and clean the pool.
This morning, when the athletes where doing their warm-ups, it became clear that there were still tiny particles of dirt in the water. This led to an emergency meeting between the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, which owns the facility, and Swimming SA, at which it was agreed to call off the programme for the day. More work is now being done to make sure that the tiny particles settle down to allow for more cleaning to continue from late afternoon today.
The Nelson Mandela Bay is confident that the Newton Park Swimming Pool will be ready for the Championships by tomorrow morning. Municipal pool staff will be working overnight to deliver a clean and world standard water sport facility. The Municipality regrets this unforeseen incident and the impact it has had on the Championships and swimmers.

The pea soup that has been dished up by the Newton Park pool administrators in PE is disgraceful. Swimmers have peaked for this. Worked hard
