Mother Earth

18 October 2011 By Alan Straton

On the 15th September 2010, I was privileged at the invitation of Enviroserve Waste Management to attend presentations by Graham Terry Senior Executive:  Strategy and Thought Leadership, SAICA on "Why sustainable development is critical to business strategy" and Cormac Cullinan, Director, Cullinan & Associates Inc. and En Act International: Perspectives from Copenhagen, Bonn and Cochabamba and the long term implications for the waste sector. Graham Terry emphasised the need for Corporate … [Read more...] about Mother Earth

Recyle Cans, Paper, Glass and Plastic in ONE Spot

Recycle

As committed as the Longhair and I are to recycling as much as we can it it a tad stressful to have to ride to different recycling spots to get rid of our junk. What makes it worse is when the, especially, glass recycling containers are moved at little or no notice. Although, it is a great stress reliever to SMASH those bottles which could be why people complain. working in conjunction with Nampak Recycling, the Summerstrand Total Garage in Admiralty Way is the first petrol station in Port … [Read more...] about Recyle Cans, Paper, Glass and Plastic in ONE Spot

Misleading Communique on Census 2011

South Africa Census 2011

Dear Sir Statistics South Africa seem to be ignoring Central and Richmond Hill in the sense that I am not aware of poster of any sort announcing the Census. Also yellow shirted census officials are conspicuous by their absence in the area. I would like to bring to the public's attention how to identify a census official: A yellow satchel with the census and Stats SA logos An A3 size book with a map of the area on the first page A yellow bib with the census and Stats SA logos A … [Read more...] about Misleading Communique on Census 2011

Nceba Moss Responds to Allegations by Jeremy Davis

13 September 2011 By Alan Straton

I wish to respond to the June 2006 article by Jeremy Davies about myself and NMBT. I wish to state the facts as follows: When I took over the Chairmanship, NMBT had a deficit of almost R1m - staff underpaid, some staff members such as Stanford Slabbert had a 100% medical aid subsidy and a 100% subsidy for the Camry he was using. In addition the fuel, tyres, service and licence renewals were paid for by the organisation 100%. The white Camry he was and still is using was sponsored to the … [Read more...] about Nceba Moss Responds to Allegations by Jeremy Davis

Workers Reject Strike

17 August 2011 By Alan Straton

What a wonderful and reassuring headline to wake up to in this mornings Herald. I must say thank you to our Municipal workers for saying No!!  Our streets have not been trashed, the ratepayers can but be grateful and appreciate the sensible reaction of our street workers. As the Ward Councillor for Central this made my day. I remember so vividly the last strike when bins were tipped out into the streets, flower beds trashed and a mess created that was so sad to see. Once again thank you to … [Read more...] about Workers Reject Strike

Control the Sale of Alcohol

17 August 2011 By Alan Straton

The entire methodology employed at present in terms of liquor license applications must be reviewed.  I would like to suggest that a moratorium on liquor license applicatons be introduced and during this time a review of all the licences which are currently active be carried out. This action will create a situation where the illegal sale and abuse of alcohol can be addressed. I must inform you that I have had total support for this initiative from BAC (Business against Crime) and the Mount … [Read more...] about Control the Sale of Alcohol

Metro Council Refuses to Dicuss the Crime Situation in Central

7 June 2011 By Alan Straton

Dear Sir I put a motion of exigency to the council meeting of the 31st May 2011 emphasising the need to address the escalating crime situation in Central. I raised the question of why in its wisdom the Metro had terminated the services provided by a private security company that had enforced and controlled security in Central to an acceptable level. This company was replaced by the so called Metro Safety and Security personnel who contributed little or nothing to the security  of the … [Read more...] about Metro Council Refuses to Dicuss the Crime Situation in Central

Thanks Jeremy Davis and Lance Paul

6 June 2011 By Alan Straton

Dear Everyone Most sincere gratitude to Councillor Jeremy Davis and as well as Mieille Onreaët & Lance Paul (From Fly Piggy magazine), who were able to respond to the recent appeal for assistance to the Block 40 residents (close to the Red Location Museum) after they were left flooded in their informal settlement after the recent rains. The residents though the Block 40 residents committee have expressed their heartfelt thanks on behalf of the residents who received food, clothing, … [Read more...] about Thanks Jeremy Davis and Lance Paul

Ward 5 Newsletter

2 March 2011 By Alan Straton

www.MyPE.co.za: To see how hard working Ward Councillors go about their jobs, see Jeremy Davis' report on what he's been up to thus far this month in Ward 5. WARD 5 MONTHLY ACTIVITY REPORT (Central, Richmond Hill, North End and Sydenham) 1. Elections 2011 Governments with no prospect of losing elections become self-serving and corrupt.  They need racial divisions to stay in power: they undermine the rule of law to stay out of jail.  Their legacy is the failed state, which has caused … [Read more...] about Ward 5 Newsletter

Your Re-Election, Councillor Davis, Fight For It

24 February 2011 By Alan Straton

Dear Councillor Davis, Elections are drawing near. It's time to up your game. It's time to listen to Uncle Rick. Most of all: it's time to fuck shit up. Your politicking has become stale, Jeremy. These days, no one is interested in someone writing letters of complaint to the municipality on their behalf. No one is bothered about letters to the editor complaining about the fire department driving over their cat. No one cares. No one. Not one. There needs to be a shake-up in … [Read more...] about Your Re-Election, Councillor Davis, Fight For It

Questions Surround IOD Centre

11 January 2011 By Alan Straton

Recently my attention was drawn to an incident in which an employee of a thoroughbred horse breeder was injured, kicked in the face by a horse. The employer brought him into the IOD Centre in Westbourne Road, Port Elizabeth where he was diagnosed to have severe fractures of the face and nose. The doctor in the IOD Centre informed me that he was in need of specialist treatment by an ENT Specialist. Furthermore he, the doctor, informed me that specialists were not prepared to attend to patients … [Read more...] about Questions Surround IOD Centre

Mendi Bottle Store Still a Hazard

11 January 2011 By Alan Straton

I visited the site of the Mendi Bottle Store in New Brighton on 26 November 2010 with three members of the Save Our City Committee, all involved in tourism. The reason for my visit was purely to see the site having discussed it on numerous occasions at various portfolio committee meetings. To my horror I was confronted by this square brick building with no windows surrounded by rotting waste as you can see in the photographs. The sad side to this story is the presence of the Emlotheni … [Read more...] about Mendi Bottle Store Still a Hazard
