I visited the site of the Mendi Bottle Store in New Brighton on 26 November 2010 with three members of the Save Our City Committee, all involved in tourism. The reason for my visit was purely to see the site having discussed it on numerous occasions at various portfolio committee meetings. To my horror I was confronted by this square brick building with no windows surrounded by rotting waste as you can see in the photographs.
The sad side to this story is the presence of the Emlotheni Memorial Park, a burial place for the five men who were incarcerated and finally executed by hanging in 1968. The memorial park is within 30 meters of the Mendi Store, in contrast it is on a well maintained and attractive site. I spoke to many of the local residents drawing their attention to the filth within meters of their front doors, they told me that the local councillor pays no attention to this state of affairs and furthermore pleaded with me to ensure the DA take over government of the Metro next year.
I raised the question of the budget to upgrade the Mendi Bottle Store, I believe a multi purpose cultural centre is planned for the site. I was made aware of the fact that R1,5 million has been in the Metro coffers since 1998 and that a further R2,5 million is earmarked for the financial year (2010/2011) and R5 million for the next financial year (2011/2012). I find these figures questionable!
