Questions Surround IOD Centre

11 January 2011 By Alan Straton

Recently my attention was drawn to an incident in which an employee of a thoroughbred horse breeder was injured, kicked in the face by a horse. The employer brought him into the IOD Centre in Westbourne Road, Port Elizabeth where he was diagnosed to have severe fractures of the face and nose. The doctor in the IOD Centre informed me that he was in need of specialist treatment by an ENT Specialist. Furthermore he, the doctor, informed me that specialists were not prepared to attend to patients recommended by the IOD Centre as they were not remunerated for the costs involved.

I feel that this issue should be brought to the attention of the Workmans Compensation Commissioner as it is quite clear to me that the IOD Centre is offering little or no service and as a private business institution is taking advantage of a situation where the patient involved should have been taken to the nearest trauma unit at a Hospital. Transport by ambulance provided by the IOD Centre is another issue that is being taken advantage of by the centre. In the case I refer to in my letter the individual was subsequently taken to the trauma unit at the Greenacres Hospital by his employer, where he was diagnosed in need of emergency surgery and the surgery took place that night in the hospital. It would appear to me that an IOD Centre is a private business and in this case is taking advantage of the Workmans Compensation Act.

The general public would appear not to be aware of this situation, and regard an IOD Centre as an essential service when in fact it offers no additional service to those in need of medical care.

With kind regards

DA Cllr Jeremy Davis
Ward 5
