South African Marine Rehabilitation and Education Centre (SAMREC) is an environmental and educational centre in Port Elizabeth which opened its doors in September 2009 with the aim to care for sick or injured African Penguins because of their vulnerability. Giant Petrel Off PE Coast
On Saturday 30 June NSRI Rescue 6, accompanied by Rescue 6 Alpha, took a patient out to sea. Onboard was Jared Harding from SAMREC and the patient - a juvenile giant Northern Petrel. The Petrel had been brought into SAMREC by a concerned citizen after picking it up on the Maitlands Beach. Dehydrated and hungry the Petrel found warmth and comfort at the SAMREC rehabilitaion centre. Jared Harding writes; "For the past 3 weeks SAMREC has been rescuing African Penguins along the coast, from Gamtoos River Mouth all the way to the Fish River. "Over the past 3 weeks, we have admitted over 55 penguins and we are asking you all to please pass on the message, that any penguin that is seen on the beach is a penguin in need. On Saturday 3 December 2011, a handful of Nelson Mandela Bay Scouts and friends braved the rainy weather to participate in the Sea Pledge Fun Day at Pollock Beach, organised by SST (Sustainable Sea Trust), SAMREC and SEAC. Port Elizabeth's local marine rehabilitation centre, SAMREC, is continuing with a great job of rehabilitating marine animals and releasing them back into Algoa Bay. Cape Receife to Bird Island
Recently I joined Rainer from Ocean Messengers on a flight over Cape Receife to Bird Island in a quest to see if we could spot the start of the Sardine Run in Algoa Bay. Rainer had spotted the sardine run off of the Tsitsikamma coast 3 weeks before and reckoned we could start seeing the sardine run here soon.
