Jared Harding writes; “For the past 3 weeks SAMREC has been rescuing African Penguins along the coast, from Gamtoos River Mouth all the way to the Fish River.
“Over the past 3 weeks, we have admitted over 55 penguins and we are asking you all to please pass on the message, that any penguin that is seen on the beach is a penguin in need. The penguins that have been admitted into our facility have been between 0.88 and 1.5 kilograms – so these little fellows need our help.”
Below is a guide on what to do if you see a penguin on the beach:
- Do not attempt to feed the bird
- Do not put the bird back in the water
- Keep the bird in a box in a quiet area
- Be careful of the beak
