Celebrate International Penguins day at SAMREC

18 April 2013 By Alan Straton

International Penguins day is celebrated worldwide on 25 April each year. This marks the annual migration of penguins to the north. Penguins are found in Antarctica, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Peru, the Falkland Islands and the Galapagos Islands. Elsewhere, they are only found in zoos.

SAMREC situated in Port Elizabeth along Marine Drive is a rehabilitation and education centre for penguins and birdlife. With St Croix Island just off Nelson Mandela Bay now been the largest breeding colony in the world, the community is invited to join in the celebrations by participating in the Happy Feet 5km Fun Run fundraiser that will take place at SAMREC in the Cape Recife Nature Reserve on the 20th April 2013.

The fun run is open to adults and children of all ages (under 9’s must be accompanied by an adult) and the route planned is wheelchair and pram friendly. The entry fee is R30 per person and proceeds will be donated to SAMREC. Late registration will take place from 07h00 to 08h30 on Saturday and the fun run will commence at 09h30. The school with the most entries will win R1000. There are medals, finisher badges for everyone plus lucky draws etc. Prize giving will take place after the race and participants can enjoy group tours of SAMREC at 11h00 and 12h00 (NO Charge). The Hungry Penguin will be catering on the day so lots of food and beverages will be on sale.

International Penguins Day is a fun time to crack a penguin joke or two and we are encouraging participants to dress up in black and white, however wearing a tuxedo in their honour is optional. Best dressed will receive a prize.

Passionate about Port Elizabeth and definitely NOT packing for Perth. Alan's ethos is epitomised in the words of Nelson Mandela; "I have fought against white domination and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society. If need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." See more articles by Alan.
