Why is it so expensive to live in Port Elizabeth?
Property Rates:
- PE – 0.0074441;
- Cape Town – 0.006062;
- Jeffreys Bay – 0.00424;
- Jhb – 0.005573
On a R1 million house I will pay R1,358 less in Cape Town, R3,153 less in Jeffreys Bay and R2,592 less in Johannesburg per year.
If you use 600kW electricity per month, you will pay R1,228 less per year in Cape Town and R1,611 less in Jeffreys Bay.
I have not even started with the water rates.

This is a very sore point and I am inserting a comment from an email that I sent through to the Tourism Grading Council last week. Guest Houses and B&B’s are one of the most “targeted” in terms of expenses. Paying commercial TV licence fees and monthly DSTV fees – if you operate legally, hospitality industry salaries, plus all the other expenses involved with providing the – just want a place to sleep for the night – acommodation to people who have no clue what cost is involved in providing said bed for the little stay over.

I do not believe that we will be renewing our TGSA
membership.
As the tough economic times take their toll it is no
longer financially viable to operate as a Guest House.
With a huge increase in rates in January (only for Guest
Houses and B&B’s)and now a near 50% increase in electricity from R1.04 to
R1.47 per kwh (on a tiered basis, however our usage means that we are on the
R1.47 on the 1st every month).
We are exploring other avenues and envisage closing our
doors as a Guest House within the foreseeable future.
Whilst everything escalates the rates that guests are
prepared to pay has decreased and with many unregistered entities operating in
the market their costs are certainly considerably less than those of us who
operate legitimately.
