Rate cut offers welcome relief

28 March 2018 By Alan Straton

Interest Rates Graph

Agriculture is a capital intensive industry with a national agriculture debt in access of R 160 million, the reduction of the interest rate by 25 basis points is therefore a welcome relief to farmers and producers who are still recovering from the aftermath of the drought of two years ago. During a drought, producers have less or nothing to take to the market and derive some income from, however, they still have to carry the cost of holding farm assets and are thus unable to meet their debt … [Read more...] about Rate cut offers welcome relief

Municipal Tariffs expected to continue above-CPI increases

4 January 2016 By Alan Straton

John Loos

John Loos writes; "It is the time when we all like to speculate heavily on the main themes that the new year is likely to hold for us, and whether or not there will be any major trend changes. At the present time, little seems to have changed early in 2016 with regards to a somewhat mediocre economic outlook for South Africa. Global commodity prices remain depressed. On the one hand, this bodes ill for South African export growth and thus for economic growth, but on the other hand it bodes … [Read more...] about Municipal Tariffs expected to continue above-CPI increases

Expect another rate hike

30 November 2015 By Alan Straton

Interest Rates Graph

It is not a great environment for consumers going forward, according to economist Sanisha Packirisamy of MMI. There is likely to be a further 25 basis point interest rate hike by the SA Reserve Bank (Sarb) during the course of 2016, in her view. She foresees this happening despite what she describes as a pedestrian growth rate in SA, stubborn inflation expectations, an expected widening of the current account deficit and a rising inflation profile. In her view it was the right thing for … [Read more...] about Expect another rate hike

What to do about rates queries and excessive valuations

26 August 2013 By Ward 2

I have received a number of calls relating to excessive rates increases on properties flowing from the recent valuation process. Please note the following information compiled by Cllr Angelo Dashwood, our Spokesperson for Budget & Treasury. As at 1 July 2013, the new Property Rates became effective. Many residents are complaining about having to pay more than the 9.14% advertised. This problem seems to be even worse when it comes to commercial property. Unfortunately, if you are faced … [Read more...] about What to do about rates queries and excessive valuations
