Members of the community in Port Elizabeth’s poverty stricken Ext 21 in Bethelsdorp received a meal and free health assessments on Monday 8 June 2015. The project was an initiative of We Care (NPO: 065-179), a non-profit, community based organisation that focuses on providing assistance to less privileged communities in Bethelsdorp.
The project was partially funded by Sovereign Foods, with a R15 000 donation, which went towards providing filling meals to those who attended. The company also received a certificate of acknowledgement from We Care.
The Department of Health also participated in the outreach event, by offering free tests for diabetes, high blood pressure, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDs. Activities for the day also included a dancing competition and face painting.
This is the first CSR project that the Uitenhage based poultry producer supported this year, as the company recently restarted its CSI programme.
Upon noticing the large number of children at the outreach, Sovereign Foods Group Executive, Thuto Maepa, shared with them the purpose of supporting the initiative. She spoke on the importance of education for all.
“The company is honoured to be a part of programmes such as these and thankful as well as committed to partnering with organisations such as We Care. Through these programmes we have the opportunity to give back to those less privileged in our communities. Our intention is to support and develop our communities.”
Maepa was also touched by the amount of children, who attended the event. “It saddens me to see so many children not in school. It is important that as communities, we encourage one another to send our children to school, so that organisations such as Sovereign Foods can assist them in gaining skills and finding employment.”
