DURBANVILLE, South Africa – Ask a small print shop where its orders come from and the answer is usually email, WhatsApp, a phone call and a walk-in, often for the same job. PrintEngine, a web-to-print software company in Durbanville, Cape Town, lists the storefront features it sets up for print shops that want customers to price, upload and approve work in one place.
The order path
Product builders let a customer choose size, stock, finish and quantity before checkout, and matrix pricing shows a price for standard work without a quote request. Artwork upload takes files, job notes and versions, automated preflight flags bleed, size, resolution and format problems early, and online proofing records sign-off before anything reaches the press. Order tracking follows a job from receipt through proofing and production to dispatch, with card payments or account terms and courier rules set by postcode.
Built for what South African shops actually sell
The product templates go well past business cards and flyers. They include NCR books and invoice books with numbering and perforation, folded brochures, booklets with page counts and binding, presentation folders, calendars, diaries, invitation sets, photo books and canvas prints. Wide-format shops can sell banners, pull-ups and gazebo graphics, and price wallpaper and window graphics by the square metre. Packaging quotes collect dielines and board details, and uniform orders capture sizes and print positions.
“The first thing we set up is the product the shop sells most, priced properly,” said PrintEngine’s onboarding manager. “If business cards and NCR books work cleanly online, the staff trust the system. Then we add proofing, delivery rules and the corporate portals. Shops that try to load all their products in week one usually stall.”
Trade accounts and training
Private B2B portals give corporate clients approved product ranges, user access and saved reorders, while retail buyers use the public shop. PrintEngine builds the templates, trains admin staff to keep products current and supports the launch of the first live catalogue.
The team works with print shops in Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Paarl, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Bloemfontein. Setup usually starts from the shop’s current product list, which can be shared through the PrintEngine website.
