Unlucky Back to School Day for 288 traffic offenders

12 January 2012 By NMB Communications

The long arm of the law caught up with several traffic offenders as 288 cases were recorded at roadblocks set up by traffic law enforcement officers of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality on the first day of schools opening yesterday.

A total of 84 warrants of arrests were executed, 50 unlicensed drivers were brought to book, 24 unlicensed motor vehicles were identified, 20 overloaded passenger vehicles were pulled off, 17 learner drivers were caught driving without supervision and two vehicles were impounded amongst others.

The road blocks started from 06:30 and were specifically put in place to ensure the safe transport of learners to schools in the city as taxi’s and scholar transport received special attention.

On Tuesday 10 January two SA Roadlink buses were discovered to have major defects at a roadworthy centre in Nelson Mandela Bay.

One of the buses, that had to be towed from the roadworthy centre, had a cracked windscreen on the right hand side, it had no front brakes, the diff was leaking oil and the lower control arm rubbers were worn.

The company was ordered to take its other bus away for repairs as it had a cracked windscreen, no number plate light, the exterior of the bus was damaged on the left hand side and its rear stabilizer rubbers were worn. It also had a worn tyre and the engine leaked oil.
