One Link Change to make your WordPress site stronger in the Search Engines

5 May 2016 By Alan Straton

Wordpress Logo

As I wander around the internet I come across many local Port Elizabeth (and other) web sites that are not making FULL use of the tools offered by their Wordpress Installation. The most irksome of these is those sites not making full use of the permalink function. HUH? Gaining good placement in the search engines is all about keywords and their relevance and Wordpress allows you to set up your permalinks to INCLUDE your page or article title. In other words these TWO links both point to … [Read more...] about One Link Change to make your WordPress site stronger in the Search Engines

Does your WordPress Add Media or Tag insert not work?

7 September 2014 By Alan Straton

Wordpress Logo

Wordpress has just updated from Version 3.9 to Version 4.0. As is always the case with a major number update I always wait a day or two before pushing the update button on one of my sites, checking it, and then updating the rest. As luck would have it MyPE had a problem with the latest update in that I was unable to Add Media or Insert Tags. A workaround for Adding Media was to use the Add Featured Image facility until I could get time to research the problem. Normally what happens is that … [Read more...] about Does your WordPress Add Media or Tag insert not work?

Paradiso Bay Guest House Kabega Park

So I get this frantic message from a client who owns a local Guest House; "My booking requests from my web site were non-existent for a couple of weeks and a regular client has just let me know that the booking form on my web site does not work!" With all the various plug-ins that can be installed with Wordpress (the Guest House web site runs on Wordpress) one is required to check for plugin and core updates on a regular basis - if you don't you run the real risk of your web site not running … [Read more...] about Don’t assume everything is running smoothly – TEST

Please THINK before you open that Social Media Account

12 August 2013 By Alan Straton

We are all guilty of the following: When a new social media site opens we all rush to join and then leave our accounts dormant. The next big sin comes from those business people who open a Social Media account and then forget about it. A case in point: Today I went on a search for a particular breed of dog from a particular breeder well known in South Africa a couple of years ago. I managed to find a free site created by this breeder on wordpress.com - i.e a free blog. This site has not … [Read more...] about Please THINK before you open that Social Media Account

MyPE Newletter – with spelling mistake

MyPE Newsletter

I am pretty proud of the new MyPE Newsletter and the Worpress Plugin being used to send you all the juicy goodness. In fact so proud am I that I am also helping out with the translation of the Wysija Wordpress Newsletter Plugin into Afrikaans  - my guttural Afrikaans comes from two years in the weermag where the 'donnerse Engelsman' had to learn to apply his hard won Afrikaans Language C Matric Symbol. Read more about the Afrikaans translation project here: Progress on the Afrikaans … [Read more...] about MyPE Newletter – with spelling mistake

Dealing with a hacked web site

13 March 2013 By Alan Straton

Web site owners are just like motorbike owners. Motorbike riders come in two flavours; those who have had an accident and those who are going to have an accident. Web site owners also fall into two categories; those who have been hacked and those who are going to be hacked. Every day, cybercriminals compromise thousands of websites. Hacks are often invisible to users, yet remain harmful to anyone viewing the page - including the site owner. For example, unbeknownst to the site owner, the … [Read more...] about Dealing with a hacked web site

Did You Notice Anything Missing?

10 September 2011 By Alan Straton

One of my favourite plugins on MyPE has been retired. After an alarming increase in out of memory incidents these past two weeks, the code miscreant finally showed his face by placing a WWE cross face stranglehold on the MyPE server memory. Of course, this had to happen at 1:00 am in the morning. BUT, I slept on, as my tireless server provider immediately went into battle to isolate the miscreant and sort the problem out. This morning I fired up the old Gmail account to see 5 notifications … [Read more...] about Did You Notice Anything Missing?

Are You Guilty of Living on the Dop System offered by Social Networks?

30 August 2011 By Alan Straton

Who says there is no money in Port Elizabeth? Come on get your hands up if you agree! Once again I have been dumbstruck at the number of people in Port Elizabeth prepared to drop in excess of R75 000.00 on a web site along with monthly fees reaching close to R10 000.00 a month and, in return, they get less visitors than 'lil old MyPE. If You Build a Web Site They WON'T Come. Unless you ensure that a number of things happen during and after............. Lets face facts, your web site … [Read more...] about Are You Guilty of Living on the Dop System offered by Social Networks?
