We are all guilty of the following: When a new social media site opens we all rush to join and then leave our accounts dormant.
The next big sin comes from those business people who open a Social Media account and then forget about it.
A case in point:
Today I went on a search for a particular breed of dog from a particular breeder well known in South Africa a couple of years ago. I managed to find a free site created by this breeder on wordpress.com – i.e a free blog. This site has not been updated since 2012. I then had a look on Twitter for their handle and also found that the breeders last update was in 2012. My conclusion? They no longer breed these dogs and I have moved on to find another source.
BUT – I am most probably wrong as it appears that these breeders embarked on a campaign to ‘dominate’ the internet with information about their breed – I say this as all the info on the wordpress.com site and on Twitter was added all during June 2012 with nothing prior or subsequent. Looking at their activity I find myself not wanting to even mail or phone them as their site and social media account looks ‘dead’.
What is the lesson here?
If your business is going to commit to a Content Management System (like WordPress) for your web site as well as maintaining a presence on Social Media you had better make sure that you keep it updated – failure to do so will make people give up and not contact you at all. Most important – don’t be a skinflint and only look for free solutions – paying for a web site and maintanance will result in you getting far better return out of your efforts.
