One of my favourite plugins on MyPE has been retired.
After an alarming increase in out of memory incidents these past two weeks, the code miscreant finally showed his face by placing a WWE cross face stranglehold on the MyPE server memory. Of course, this had to happen at 1:00 am in the morning. BUT, I slept on, as my tireless server provider immediately went into battle to isolate the miscreant and sort the problem out.
This morning I fired up the old Gmail account to see 5 notifications from hard working MyPE server techs and the last one from Ben made me smile and nod my head sagely as I realised that my money IS well spent with the web hosting company that hosts the MyPE server.
Ben wrote;
The server was reporting unresponsive in our monitoring system. When I checked the server at console it was out of memory and was rebooted. When the server came back up I logged in as the load was starting to rise.
I saw that there were a number of crashed database tables so I ran an optimization and repair on all the database tables to correct this. The server, however, is still experiencing issues with high load which appears to be caused by the Tweet Blender plugin on MyPE.
The PHP processes generated by this plugin start to build up, using up the memory on the server and causing it to crash. I would suggest ether disabling that plugin or finding another plugin that would suit your needs. If you have any questions just let me know.
Now I need to point one thing out – I run another server with a different hosting company who have a standard response to any such situation which goes something like this; “Your server was found to be out of memory, we have disabled all processes and access to the account until such time that you can provide us with a solution.”
So, after reading Ben’s advice and seeing that I couldn’t get any joy from the Tweet Blender web site I have disabled the plugin whilst I look to see if there are any less memory hungry plugins that give me the ability to stream tweets from Twitter lists to MyPE.
Now – I ask you with tears in my eyes; “Which web hosting company would you rather deal with?”
If you want to deal with Liquid Web, a company that will allow you to sleep at night knowing that your web site will always be up then CLICK HERE.

After de-activating the code miscreant we discovered that Tweet Blender had left a legacy problem in that it continued to attempt to run it’s PHP processes. Of course we only discovered this AFTER suspending MyPE and AFTER de-activating every plugin. So my Saturday was one of fun and laughter and the tossing of various blue words at various inanimate objects.
Thank Goodness that my mates at Liquid Web stayed the course with me whilst we sorted the problem out.
AND – I have pared down some of the plug ins going forward – holding thumbs.
Are we having fun yet?
