In a co-ordinated release between SANCCOB, SANParks, NSRI and Extreme Projects 72 previously oil soiled penguins were released just off of St Croix Island today. Penguins Under Threat
The African penguin is only found on the southern African coast. The endemic population is at an historic low with the numbers of breeding pairs on southern African islands down to 26000 pairs from an estimated 121 000 breeding pairs in 1956. Over the last three generations, there has been a 50% overall decrease in breeding pairs. Recently, the rate of decline increased from about 1.44 % in 2006 to 2.34% in 2010. International Penguins day is celebrated worldwide on 25 April each year. This marks the annual migration of penguins to the north. On Saturday 3 December 2011, a handful of Nelson Mandela Bay Scouts and friends braved the rainy weather to participate in the Sea Pledge Fun Day at Pollock Beach, organised by SST (Sustainable Sea Trust), SAMREC and SEAC.
