Biggest Penguin Release

15 September 2016 By Alan Straton

Penguin release NSRI
NSRI’s Rescue 6 Alpha crew release some of the 72 previously oiled penguins into the waters off of St Croix today.

In a co-ordinated release between SANCCOB, SANParks, NSRI and Extreme Projects 72 previously oil soiled penguins were released just off of St Croix Island today.

This follows on from an oil spill in Algoa Bay during August 2016 after which, on Sunday 21 August, 92 oiled African Penguins and 61 penguin chicks were admitted to the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) centre in Cape St Francis.

SANCCOB’s Rehabilitation Cordinator in the Eastern Cape, Juanita Raath said; “We are extremely happy to release such a big group of penguins back into the wild today and give these individuals a second chance at life. With the current South African population numbers at just over 19 000 breeding pairs, saving each individual penguin is crucial to the survival of the species. We are thankful to all the partners involved in making this a successful rescue operation and to all the volunteers and supporters for standing side-by-side with us throughout the rehabilitation process.

Another 50 penguins from the same oil spill will be released from SAMREC at Cape Recife on Sunday 18 September 2016.

At this moment in time SAMSA have not yet released the name of the miscreant ship that spilled oil in Algoa Bay creating this disaster.

The remaining penguins will be released once they do not show any signs of infection, their feathers are waterproof and they weigh at least 2.8 kilograms.
