On Tuesday, 13 August 2024, the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB), hosted a celebratory opening event with ISUZU MOTORS South Africa and various stakeholders to officially open their newly renovated Home Pen enclosure at its Gqeberha premises. The Port Elizabeth Penguin Festival is taking place on Saturday 5 October at SANCCOB, located in the Cape Recife Nature Reserve. The morning fun run starts at 09h30, running to the lighthouse and back to the center, leading to a fun-filled day before the penguin release. Rieghard Janse van Rensburg, NSRI Jeffreys Bay station commander, said: On Wednesday 28 September, at 12h37, NSRI Jeffreys Bay received a call from a local SANCCOB (SA Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds) representative requesting assistance with a penguin appearing to be oiled on the beach. In a co-ordinated release between SANCCOB, SANParks, NSRI and Extreme Projects 72 previously oil soiled penguins were released just off of St Croix Island today. This follows on from an oil spill in Algoa Bay during August 2016 after which, on Sunday 21 August, 92 oiled African Penguins and 61 penguin chicks were admitted to the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) centre in Cape St Francis.
