Bayworld's oceanarium will be reopening to members of the public from the beginning of December 2011. The inevitable temporary closure of the oceanarium on 1st April 2011 was necessitated by the need to stop the deterioration of the oceanarium infrastructure and to reduce the operational costs of the facility. Bayworld will be closing the Oceanarium doors to the public on 31 March 2011. This is to allow for the final preparations for sending the resident Cape Fur seals and African penguins to the National Zoo, in Pretoria on a breeding loan. This process has been necessitated to allow the former dolphin lake to be decommissioned.
