Bayworld Oceanarium to Close on 31 March 2011

Bayworld will be closing the Oceanarium doors to the public on 31 March 2011. This is to allow for the final preparations for sending the resident Cape Fur seals and African penguins to the National Zoo, in Pretoria on a breeding loan.

This process has been necessitated to allow the former dolphin lake to be decommissioned. The filtration systems and other infrastructure of the dolphin lake is connected with that of the seal and penguin habitats so shutting down of these spaces will be necessary. Once the animals have been relocated, work will begin on new small tank aquaria of Algoa Bay sea life as well as a new African Penguin habitat, each with independent life support systems.

These exhibits are viewed as interim arrangements as the efforts of the Multiparty Task Team, involving the Department of Sport Recreation Arts and culture, Department of Economic Development and Environmental Affairs and the Nelson Bay Municipality, are intensified in establishing a funding plan for the redevelopment of a new Oceanarium facility for the City.

The programmes of the Museum and Snake Park will continue as usual, as well as the popular education programme. School Groups and paid-up members of Bayworld Friends will continue to utilize the Oceanarium for scheduled visits, up until the time that the seals and penguins are relocated.

Bayworld invites all residents of  Nelson Mandela Bay to come and enjoy the complex which consists of Museum, Snake Park and Oceanarium at reduced admission for adults, R20 (half price) and children R10, on 27 and 28 March 2011.

The complex opens at 09:00 and closes at 16:30.
