NMMU Madiba “Ubuntu” Shirt Sculpture

NMMU embarked on a public art project aligned to Vision 2020 and initiated by Arts and Culture. The Madiba Shirt is part of the public art project, phase 1. A call for proposals went out in the media and artists entered. Three artists were selected and sponsored to do small representations of the proposed works. RIP Nelson Rolihlala Mandela

Nelson Mandela, the first democratically elected president of post apartheid South Africa died at home last night - 5 December 2013 at around 10 minutes to 9:00 pm. He had been receiving intensive medical care at home for a lung infection after spending three months in hospital. The Coega Development Corporation (CDC) leadership and staff honoured Nelson Mandela and his legacy by committing the organisation's resources and "hand power" to two local organisations as part of its Nelson Mandela Day initiative. The CDC staff painted at Livingstone Hospital – and donated 27 mattresses to its paediatric ward – and then moved through to Cheshire Home for the Disabled in Cleary Park where it also painted and handed over donations from the CDC staff. On Saturday 13 July, over 100 Volkswagen Group South Africa employees reported for volunteer action in a bid to uplift the town centre of Uitenhage by cleaning and beautifying Algoa Road.    The operation, covering over a kilometer from the Goodyear intersection to Innes School, included a major clean up of the road's verges, weeding, trimming of trees and removal of rubbish.
