Five hundred Grade 12 pupils attending Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s accounting winter school celebrated former president Nelson Mandela’s birthday by writing 500 personal messages in a 40-page “card”, which has been published on the NMMU School of Accounting’s Facebook page.
- “You are a true hero,” wrote Collegiate High’s Roxanne Weiss.
- “Because of you, I never had to experience apartheid and I am grateful to you for that.” St James Secondary School’s Sinovuyo Ngalonkulu wrote
- “I wish you a speedy recovery because as South Africans we still need you. I cannot express the gratitude that I have for all the sacrifices you have made for our country.” “I salute you, Tata. Happy birthday!” wrote KwaZakhele High’s Anele Mqikela, addressing his message to “the man who sacrificed his happiness so that a soul like me can get a better life”.
