Quotes from Nelson Mandela ahead of #NMBme2016 Elections

11 July 2016 By Alan Straton

Nelson Rolihlala Mandela

There are many people who feel that it is useless and futile to continue talking about peace and non-violence against a government whose only reply is savage attacks on an unarmed and defenceless people. “True, the struggle will be a bitter one. Leaders will be deported, imprisoned, and even shot. The government will terrorise the people and their people and their leaders in an effort to halt the forward march; ordinary forms of organisation will be rendered impossible. But the spirit of the … [Read more...] about Quotes from Nelson Mandela ahead of #NMBme2016 Elections

Don’t you love an election year?

10 April 2016 By Alan Straton

voting, independent electoral commission

Frankly and in my humble personal opinion we should have an election every year as it seems that only then do we see our politicians scurrying around like busy little bees kissing babies, pumping flesh, opening envelopes (or is it e-mails?), dedicating statues, engaging with business (and the poor and the rich and the disabled and the women and the men and the gay and the lesbian), doing photo op worthy contributions to service delivery, reflecting on their contributions - the list is … [Read more...] about Don’t you love an election year?

The Most Viewed Article on MyPE this Year

23 May 2011 By Alan Straton

The article occupying the hallowed spot of most read this year took just two days to accomplish that feat and, in the process, brought MyPE to a grinding halt, TWICE. It just goes to show that Port Elizabethans closely watched the 18 May local elections and that it WAS a very close race. MOST pleasing to us at MyPE is that the voting poll that we started on Tuesday 17 May and ended on Thursday 19 May showed that MyPE readers are equally represented across ALL political parties as the final … [Read more...] about The Most Viewed Article on MyPE this Year

The Death of Our Broad Based Democracy?

23 May 2011 By Alan Straton

Having a look at the voting percentages from the local elections in 2000, 2006 and 2011 one can see that only five Port Elizabeth (Nelson Mandela Bay) political parties have consistently won a seat on council in all three elections. The ANC and DA have dominated council since 2000, with both experiencing marked changes in support. With 63 local council seats the ANC will enjoy a majority of 3 for the next five years. The graph below shows the results for the five PE Political Parties … [Read more...] about The Death of Our Broad Based Democracy?
