Eastern Cape Vote Count Progressing Well

19 May 2011 By Alan Straton

See Nelson Mandela Bay Election Results here: Election Results Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

The counting of votes cast during the municipal elections was progressing fairly well in the Eastern Cape, according to the province’s electoral officer, Bongani Finca.

By 9:00 am on Thursday, 90 percent of the results had been captured on the system, with about 65 percent of those results audited and released, Finca told BuaNews.

He was confident that all the results would have been captured, audited and released before the end of Thursday.

Voting stations in the province closed at 7:00 pm on Wednesday but there were still long queues in some areas at the cut-off time.

“All the people who were in the queues at 7:00 pm were helped. There were some areas where there were still long queues at closing time, especially in Buffalo City and Nelson Mandela Bay where people have a tendency of leaving things to the last minute,” Finca added.

It was still too early to tell how many voters cast their ballot in the Eastern Cape.

“We are still counting. We will only have those figures once every ballot has been counted,” he said. – BuaNews

Unfortunately I heard this morning that some of the IEC staff in Ward 22 were recommending certain councillors over others. Now it sounds as if both Councillors were from the ANC and one was the girlfriend of some or other councillor, who the IEC staff perceived as not being deserving of being elected. How can this be allowed?
Secondly, it wasn’t only the DA who were giving things away yesterday, the ANC were dishing out oranges to the tired voters, too.
