The Death of Our Broad Based Democracy?

Having a look at the voting percentages from the local elections in 2000, 2006 and 2011 one can see that only five Port Elizabeth (Nelson Mandela Bay) political parties have consistently won a seat on council in all three elections.

The ANC and DA have dominated council since 2000, with both experiencing marked changes in support.

With 63 local council seats the ANC will enjoy a majority of 3 for the next five years.

The graph below shows the results for the five PE Political Parties that have won a seat on the local council EVERY year since 2000:

As on can see, the real race is only between two parties; The ANC and the DA. Analysts say that this is an indication of a maturing democracy.

Could this point towards a death of our broad based political party representation?
