2012 Ironman Swim Support Personnel
An event of the magnitude of the Ironman does not run properly without a mass of volunteers and logistics - some are paid, some volunteer and all are enthusiastic and dedicated. Having myself been involved in many sailing events (pop down to Hobie Beach from 27 to 30 April to see the Boardwalk Hobie 16 Nationals) I am intimately aware of the precious value of volunteers. Often we will see Captains of Industry giving up holiday time to assist at Sailing Regattas and their only form of payment? … [Read more...] about 2012 Ironman Swim Support Personnel
Help us Name These Ironman 2012 Swimmers

The first swimmer home was Clemente Alonso-Mckernan from Spain in a time of 54 minutes and 53 seconds, second was Kent Horner from South Africa in 57 minute and 55 seconds, closely followed by Mike Aigroz from Switzerland four seconds later. The last swimmer in to beat the 2 hours and twenty minute cut-off was Kenneth Hubbard from the United Emirates in 2 hours 19 minutes and 41 seconds. In 2011 the swim times were much … [Read more...] about Help us Name These Ironman 2012 Swimmers
My Ironman Lump in the Throat Moment
The Longhair and I were up at 4:00 am on Sunday morning in preparation to accompany Morven Maclean out to the start of the Specsavers Ironman swim (give his guest house, Barnacle Bed and Breakfast, a bash). Morven formed part of the large volunteer force providing support for the almost 1 800 swimmers for the first leg of the 2012 Specsavers Ironman. We gathered at the harbour and waited for the rain to abate before motoring out at 6:30 am - two 140 horsepower motors ensured that we were at … [Read more...] about My Ironman Lump in the Throat Moment

I found out that PTC can stand for more than one thing ….
Join the PTC for a Fanta Brown at the Yacht Club was the invite; "Strange", thought I, "a talking Positive Temperature Coefficient thermistor needs a cooling drink to reset?" It turns out that this PTC actually stands for the Plumstead Triathlon Club - a bunch of crazy people who own bicycles, costumes and running shoes that enable them to pound pavements and dodge sharks all in the name of fitness. The last time I ran anywhere was to the toilet and THAT under protest. As my dear sainted, … [Read more...] about I found out that PTC can stand for more than one thing ….
Has the Ironman Lost Public Appeal to Port Elizabeth?
We are now 3 days after the Ironman event that was won by local hero Raynard Tissink on Sunday 10 April 2011. Living in an online world I gauge the popularity of events using a number of indicators such as YouTube videos, Blog mentions and the like. I am sure that you would agree that a strong gauge of popularity of an event online is the number of YouTube videos that one is able to view directly after the event. As a result I have been doing a search every now and then on YouTube for … [Read more...] about Has the Ironman Lost Public Appeal to Port Elizabeth?
Chumming of a Different Kind from Local Beach Manager
Sundays final round of the popular Weekend Post Ocean Racing Series was marred by a nasty incident on Sunday morning as over 300 swimmers from around the country participated in the last swim of Season 6 at Hobie Beach. About 30 minutes into the event, a group of up to six swimmers deliberately entered the water without registering for the event and proceeded to swim directly into the race participants as the 3km swimmers were completing their 2nd lap and colliding into several … [Read more...] about Chumming of a Different Kind from Local Beach Manager

Port Elizabeth Offers a Bit of April Loving
Love will be at the heart of Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism's (NMBT) campaign for the 2011 April holidays, with a distinct feeling in the city that it's a place with "lots to love and lots to do". "There is no better person to ask why one should love Nelson Mandela Bay than a local," said Titus Chuene, NMBT marketing manager. "When tourists come to Nelson Mandela Bay it is often to visit family and friends, so it's these locals who will be able to best market the city - because they live here and … [Read more...] about Port Elizabeth Offers a Bit of April Loving
