2012 Ironman Swim Support Personnel

An event of the magnitude of the Ironman does not run properly without a mass of volunteers and logistics – some are paid, some volunteer and all are enthusiastic and dedicated.

Having myself been involved in many sailing events (pop down to Hobie Beach from 27 to 30 April to see the Boardwalk Hobie 16 Nationals) I am intimately aware of the precious value of volunteers. Often we will see Captains of Industry giving up holiday time to assist at Sailing Regattas and their only form of payment? A bottle of Red Wine and a packed lunch a day. And yet they come back to help time and time again.

Ssssh don’t tell Pravin – he may find a way to tax that or maybe Labour Minister, Mildred Oliphant will declare voluntarism as slavery or insist that it falls under the statutes of BEE!

Anyway – we salute the volunteers that we saw during the 2012 Ironman swim this past Sunday. The course was lined with lifeguards on Malibu boards, Rubber Ducks and Jetskis patrolled the perimeter filled with SAPS personnel and more lifeguards. NSRI’s Rescue 6 Alpha was also on standby with personnel looking purposeful in their helmets and wetsuits.

Guys and Girls – the sacrifices you made on Sunday all contribute to a happier more prosperous Port Elizabeth society, Well Done!
