The 2012 Ironman swim has been named as one of the toughest to date. The first swimmer home was Clemente Alonso-Mckernan from Spain in a time of 54 minutes and 53 seconds, second was Kent Horner from South Africa in 57 minute and 55 seconds, closely followed by Mike Aigroz from Switzerland four seconds later.
The last swimmer in to beat the 2 hours and twenty minute cut-off was Kenneth Hubbard from the United Emirates in 2 hours 19 minutes and 41 seconds.
In 2011 the swim times were much quicker – first in was Andreas Bocherer in 47 minutes and 43 seconds followed by Port Elizabeth’s Raynard Tissink in 48 minutes and 54 seconds with Daniel Fontana third in 48 minutes and 54 seconds.
In contrast with 2012 the number of finishers in 2011 was up at 1478 compared with 1376 finishers this year. The unconfirmed figure of medical assistance on the water before the end of the event was 25. I do not recall one medical assistance in the 2011 event which was characterised by warm, sunny and flat seas.
It certainly seems as though those first 3.8 kilometres in the water represent the Iron in Ironman.
During the swim event MyPE photographed a number of swimmers – unfortunately we were unable to stop them and get their names so humbly ask if you could name your swimmer in the comments section below the images:
