24 May 2017 By Alan Straton

Google Trends 20170524

MyPE ran this Google trend report, from 1 January 2004 to date, comparing the number of searches on Google for 'Port Elizabeth', Uitenhage' and 'Nelson Mandela Bay'. The trend is pretty revealing. Link: https://trends.google.co.za/trends/explore?date=all&geo=ZA&q=Port%20Elizabeth,Uitenhage,Nelson%20Mandela%20Bay … [Read more...] about Google Trends PE vs Uitenhage vs NMB

Submit URL to Google

11 April 2017 By Alan Straton

Submit URL to Google

In the 'old days' the simplest way to submit new and updated URL's from your web site was to register your site and app with Google's Search Console. Once you had registered, you uploaded your sitemap through a simple interface by navigating to the Crawl > Sitemaps section. BUT, even that had technophobes hyperventilating and reaching for the old Brown Paper Bag from last night's takeaways. Now Google has taken a leaf out of the Social Media norm of sharing a link to something that … [Read more...] about Submit URL to Google

Steve Biko – Immortalised as Today’s Google Doodle

18 December 2016 By Alan Straton

Steve Biko - Google Doodle

Stephen Bantu Biko (18 December 1946 – 12 September 1977) - an anti-apartheid activist in South Africa in the 1960s and 1970s would have been 70 years of age today. See a Rare TV Interview with Steve Biko HERE. As a student leader, Biko founded the Black Consciousness Movement (BCM) which would empower and mobilize much of the urban black population. Since his death in police custody, he has been called a martyr of the anti-apartheid movement. While living, his writings and activism … [Read more...] about Steve Biko – Immortalised as Today’s Google Doodle

How many people died under apartheid – #RaceFreeMonth – SEO Racism

12 February 2016 By Alan Straton

February has been declared Race Free Month and every day in February we at MyPE will be combating the subtle racist nuances that hamper our thinking, cloud our judgement, restrict our development and increase the tension in South Africa. This morning was a bit of a revelation for me as I typed this question into Google; "how many people died under apartheid". And Google in it's normal (albeit in my opinion racist) fashion popped out it's own suggestions for the results. Of the 10 results … [Read more...] about How many people died under apartheid – #RaceFreeMonth – SEO Racism

What Men and Women Should, Shouldn’t, Need To and Cannot

23 October 2013 By Alan Straton

Men Cannot

A series of ads, developed as a creative idea for UN Women by Memac Ogilvy & Mather Dubai, uses genuine Google searches to reveal the widespread prevalence of sexism and discrimination against women. Based on searches dated 9 March, 2013 the ads expose negative sentiments ranging from stereotyping as well as outright denial of women's rights. "When we came across these searches, we were shocked by how negative they were and decided we had to do something with them," says Christopher Hunt, … [Read more...] about What Men and Women Should, Shouldn’t, Need To and Cannot

Sell more products online by getting these points right

2 March 2013 By Alan Straton

Time and time again I am asked to help web site owners to sell more products online. They see that MyPE is very 'visible' in the search engines and want me to share my knowledge to help them do the same. Invariably I look at the web site that is performing 'poorly' and find a litany of problems that people are reluctant to fix citing a myriad of objections. In the background I hear them thinking things like; "snake oil", "magic fix", "shortcut, "he is not telling us everything", "too expensive", … [Read more...] about Sell more products online by getting these points right

Don’t Belive the Lies

23 August 2012 By Alan Straton

It is people like this that make me angry - first of all they send me unsolicited e-mail and secondly they lie, lie, lie. The e-mail reads: It's a fact: more people find out about your business on Facebook or Twitter than on search engines. Making these sites work maybe tricky for you, but it's business as usual for us. Let us improve your visibility and enhance your image. It's part of our complete Internet Marketing package. We'll be more than your friends - we'll be your partners. I am … [Read more...] about Don’t Belive the Lies

How to Rank High on Google (NOT)

16 May 2012 By Alan Straton

Axandra SEO

I recently spent some interesting time with the owner of a large local Port Elizabeth web site discussing how to get her site to perform well against the millions of others out there. This conversation continued with her web site and SEO advisors telling her much the same kind of stuff you will see in the Matt Cutts PARODY video below. Matt Cutts works for the Search Quality group in Google, specializing in search engine optimisation issues and is the go to guy for anyone wanting search engine … [Read more...] about How to Rank High on Google (NOT)

Project Glass – Creating a Further Disconnect?

5 April 2012 By Alan Straton

Google Project Glass

You see them sitting at work, the dinner table or in a pub - beavering away on their mobile devices and not taking note of the social happenings in their immediate surroundings. I predict that the next scarce employable skill will be face to face conversation. Fighter pilots have heads up displays so Google reckoned; "Why not develop heads up displays for the masses and wire them into the internet on a 24/7 basis". Google Project Glass's prototype version look like a very polished and … [Read more...] about Project Glass – Creating a Further Disconnect?

When Small is Better

6 April 2011 By Alan Straton

The normal question on everyone's lips when they find out that I run the MyPE web site as my 'job' is; "But, how do you make money?" Apart from the stock answer; "Slowly" I try and explain to them that there are a number of avenues open to a web site owner. Here at MyPE we use: Google Adsense - those contextual text and image ads you see Affiliate Marketing - links and ads to product and service vendors Cost per Impression - footer and sidebar 'filler' ads Cost per Period - … [Read more...] about When Small is Better
