When Small is Better

The normal question on everyone’s lips when they find out that I run the MyPE web site as my ‘job’ is; “But, how do you make money?”

Apart from the stock answer; “Slowly” I try and explain to them that there are a number of avenues open to a web site owner.

Here at MyPE we use:

  • Google Adsense – those contextual text and image ads you see
  • Affiliate Marketing – links and ads to product and service vendors
  • Cost per Impression – footer and sidebar ‘filler’ ads
  • Cost per Period – reserved for local advertisers
  • Cost per Acquisition – product and service vendors that pay us per item or service sold

Normally at this point I lose the person wanting to know how we make money on MyPE – watching their eyes glaze over and become furtive as they desperately look for someone else to talk to is a sure sign of early listener fatigue.

Anyway – the ‘learned brigade’ have always recommended that if a web site has limited real estate then using the Google AdSense 728×15 Text Link Unit is the way to go. Of course I am a stubborn old cuss, able to resist change for far longer than anyone else so it took me a while to implement the recommendations of the ‘learned brigade’. And, boy am I upset that I never did it even earlier!

Google AdSense terms preclude me from pointing out where the ads are, how much I make and are most definitely clear on never exhorting anyone to click on any Google Ads on any of my web sites – you have been warned. Suffice to say that I track very closely which Google Ads perform the best and can tell you that the 728×15 Text Link Ad is the best performer in terms of impressions and earnings and the second best in terms of click through ratio.

If you run a fairly popular site then please note that I concur with the ‘learned brigade’ and agree that you will not go wrong in placing the 728×15 Text Link on your site.
