Planned Western Suburbs Water Shutdown

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality would like to inform residents and businesses that there will be a water shutdown of the Motherwell Chelsea Bulk Water Supply system for emergency repairs as well as augmentation to control systems on Wednesday the 27th of June 2018 . These repairs have been necessitated by vandalism that has taken place in a pipeline from this water supply.

Due to the extent of the damage, the technicians will be forced to shut supply down all the way from Stanford Road to the Chelsea reservoir outlet. The section consists of 3 pipes, ranging from 600 – 800 mm and then changes to the 700 mm and 500 mm pipes south of old Bethelsdorp.

Unfortunately, it is necessary to implement one major shutdown, where we can do both maintenance work as well as work that will restore the functionality of the pipeline. This approach will eliminate future shutdowns that will affect consumers, as we will be able to isolate shorter sections of this pipeline.

Work includes the following:

  1. Installation of three bulk supply meters
  2. 4 scour valves
  3. 3 air valves
  4. 2 large cross connections

The following areas will be affected:

  • Rowallan Park
  • Kabega
  • Westering
  • Linton Grange
  • Lorraine
  • Baywest Area
  • Gelvandale
  • Malabar
  • Cotswold

Repairs are expected to be complete by Wednesday before midnight and water tankers will be arranged for areas where supply cannot be augmented from alternative
sources.

The technicians will also fix a major leak and a few minor ones in the pipeline, do work required for Nooitgedagt Phase 3, and vastly improve the functionality of the pipeline.

The Municipality would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by this major repair and maintenance work.
