Two investigators of the Mandela Bay Development Agency, an entity of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, arrested a suspect of a series of break-ins at kiosks, that took place over the past eighteen months, today at 11:30.
Angus Wilson and Sicelo Zalabe’s good work came after they obtained excellent CCTV footage from the control room in South End, manned by the municipality’s Safety and Security personnel.
Although two men took part in more than 10 break-ins that cost one trader as much as R12 000 and others around R6000, the CCTV footage only produced a clear and usable image of one of the thugs.
This suspect’s picture was then used by the two investigators to trace him.
Angus Wilson said they were very surprised to see the suspect walk down a street in Central and they sneaked a quick look at the picture just to be sure before apprehending the suspected culprit.
Wilson said if it was not for the good quality footage of the municipality’s state-of-the art camera then the suspect would still be a free man and able to disrupt the economic viability of the traders whose stalls are located between Russell Road and the Port Elizabeth City Hall.
He was then taken to the Humewood Police Station. The South African Police Services will be continuing the investigation and the search for the second suspect.
