R200 Million Investment by FAW Trucks SA Solidifies Eastern Cape as a Strategic Hub for Automotive Manufacturing

12 November 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

The Coega Development Corporation (Coega), yesterday, proudly announced a major boost for South Africa’s automotive sector with a R200 million investment declaration by FAW Trucks South Africa (SA).

This investment is a testament to FAW Trucks SA’s commitment to South Africa’s growth potential, particularly within the Eastern Cape, underscoring the potential for job creation, economic growth, and industrialisation.

The investment declaration was formalised at the Coega Business Centre in Gqeberha and was witnessed by Honourable Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, Premier of the Eastern Cape, and dignitaries from the Jilin Provincial People’s Congress of China.

The Eastern Cape Premier, Honourable Mabuyane, welcomed the investment by FAW.

“We welcome this investment by First Automotive Works. We believe that it is a good decision for the continent, and for relations between South Africa and China,” said Mabuyane.

This new investment comes a decade after FAW SA first established its R600 million assembly plant in Zone 2 of the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ), a facility spanning 30,000 square metres. Notably, FAW SA recently celebrated 30 successful years in the South African market, having established itself as a leader in the automotive sector and one of the largest investors from China in South Africa.

Strengthening South Africa-China Relations:

The R200 million investment by FAW SA not only solidifies the Eastern Cape’s position as a pivotal player in the automotive industry but also reflects the strong and growing relationship between South Africa and China. The visit by officials from Jilin Province aimed to strengthen bilateral ties, explore further investment opportunities, and encourage cultural exchange.

The Eastern Cape-China partnership holds immense potential for job creation, infrastructure development, and sustainable economic growth, and FAW SA’s renewed commitment exemplifies this shared vision for the future.

Mr. Themba Koza, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Coega Development Corporation, commented on the investment: “We are thrilled to announce this investment declaration by FAW Trucks SA. It is a testament to the enduring partnership between our province and this esteemed global leader in automotive manufacturing.

“This investment not only strengthens the automotive sector in the Eastern Cape but also reaffirms Coega’s position as a prime destination for international investment.”

He continued: “FAW SA’s journey in South Africa has been remarkable, and we are proud to have supported their establishment in our Special Economic Zone over a decade ago. As we celebrate this milestone, we remain committed to fostering an environment that attracts further investments, creates jobs, and contributes to the sustainable development of our region.”

Mr. Peng Lei, FAW SA Coega SEZ Assembly Plant General Manager, shared its plans for the plant’s development.

“We are planning to level up our productivity. We plan on extending our facilities and enlarging our storage area. In addition, we want to digitise our production and improve our training centres,” said Lei.

An Investment in South Africa’s Economic Future

This significant investment reaffirms Coega SEZ’s standing as a strategic hub for automotive manufacturing in South Africa. By driving job creation, economic stimulation, and attracting further investment, this partnership between Coega and FAW Trucks SA will contribute to the broader prosperity of the Eastern Cape and South Africa.

Coega Embraces Medium-term Budget Policy Statement as a Catalyst for Growth

1 November 2024 by Alan Leave a Comment

With South Africa at a critical turning point, and with load shedding lifted since March 2024, the National Treasury’s Medium Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS), which was delivered by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana this week, could not have come at a more opportune time.

Dr. Nicolene Hamman, Economist from the Coega Development Corporation (Coega), writes that business and consumer optimism is on the rise, inflation pressures are easing, and the 100-day mark of the Government of National Unity (GNU) has injected a sense of hope and possibility into the nation’s socio-economic landscape. These shifts bode well for investment promotion and economic growth, which are crucial for South Africa’s future.

The MTBPS did not signal significant policy shifts, instead affirming the government’s resolve for fiscal consolidation, debt stabilisation, and expenditure discipline. This commitment focuses on stabilising government debt, prioritising public spending toward capital projects, and ensuring essential services are protected, even amid fiscal constraints. For Coega, this focus aligns well with our core objectives as an implementing agent and investment destination in South Africa.

The MTBPS’s emphasis on sustainable development, inclusive growth, poverty reduction, and building a capable state resonates with Coega’s strategic vision as a champion of socio-economic development. In this regard, infrastructure investment emerges as a cornerstone of the government’s strategy to address pressing issues of unemployment, poverty, and inequality. The budget underscores strengthening public-private partnerships (PPP) and amending PPP regulations to catalyse infrastructure investment, as well as reconfiguring the Budget Facility for Infrastructure (BFI) into a centralised gateway for large infrastructure projects. This approach signals a profound commitment to collaborative development, which is precisely the kind of environment in which Coega thrives.

As an active implementing agent, Coega is aware of the transformative impact infrastructure investment has on economic growth and job creation. Since launching our Non-SEZ Infrastructure Development Programme in 2004, Coega has successfully completed billions of rands’ worth of projects in partnership with key government departments. In the 2023/24 financial year alone, we supported the Eastern Cape’s Department of Education and Department of Health, delivering critical infrastructure projects valued at R4 billion. These efforts have not only enhanced state capacity but have also contributed directly to social upliftment and economic resilience.

Beyond infrastructure, Coega commends the government’s focus on reforming public services, advancing digital transformation, and public procurement reforms. We applaud the second phase of Operation Vulindlela, which will further streamline processes, enhance efficiency, and position South Africa as an increasingly attractive investment destination. At Coega, we have long championed the potential of public-private partnerships, which not only accelerate economic growth but attract private investment to support national development goals. As a Schedule 3(d) registered public entity under the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), Coega has pioneered innovative financing models to reduce risk to the fiscus, including the development of a limited recourse finance instrument approved by Treasury.

Equally significant are the commitments in the MTBPS toward energy and water security—critical enablers for economic growth and investment. Coega stands ready to support these objectives, recognising that energy and water reliability are crucial for the continued success of businesses and industries in South Africa.

In conclusion, Minister Godongwana’s MTBPS paints a clear picture of the Government of National Unity’s commitment to an inclusive, sustainable, and prosperous South Africa. Coega, with its vast expertise and innovative financing mechanisms, is poised to contribute actively to realising the MTBPS’s vision. As we advance our infrastructure development initiatives and foster partnerships across sectors, Coega remains committed to shaping a vibrant economic future for South Africa. Together, we can turn today’s optimism into tomorrow’s shared prosperity.

Coega Broadens Horizons for Hospitality and Dietetics Students

29 October 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

The Coega Development Corporation (COEGA) recently hosted 35 students from the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) Departments of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, and Hospitality Management, for educational tours at the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and Bluewater Bay Sunrise Hotel, in Gqeberha.

The Human Nutrition and Dietetics students gained insight into cold storage and fruit packing at the KHOLD facility in Zone 1 of the Coega SEZ, while the Hospitality Management students explored kitchen management, food safety, and general operations at the 4-star Bluewater Bay Sunrise Hotel.

NMU Head of Department for Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Professor Annelie Gresse, said the aim of the tours was to expose students to the diverse career opportunities within the food and hospitality industries.

“These visits will inspire students to explore the diverse career paths available within the food and hospitality industries. It is important that students know they are not restricted to a specific type of job at a specific type of facility, but rather, that they can find a place to practice their skills in any sector. By exposing them to various sectors, we aim to broaden their horizons and empower them to make informed career choices,” said Gresse.

The tours provided students with a unique opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, enhancing their practical skills.

NMU Dietetics Student, Geraldine Matsevire, shared her excitement to learn more about the various industries within the Coega SEZ and Coega’s independent businesses, like the Bluewater Bay Sunrise Hotel.

“I’m excited to see the various work done by Coega and also to learn more about food safety and awareness,” said Matsevire.

By combining theoretical knowledge with practical exposure, Coega aims to empower the next generation of skilled professionals to make a lasting impact on their industry.

Bluewater Bay Sunrise Hotel General Manager, Ms. Sisonke Mapuma, shared that the hospitality industry, like many others, is premised on professionals’ willingness to serve.

“A successful hospitality industry is built on exceptional service. Aspiring professionals must understand that their interactions with customers, whether related to food or overall experience, can significantly impact a business’s reputation and bottom line. This is why practical, real-world experience is crucial for success in this field,” said Mapuma.

In conclusion, Coega reaffirms its commitment to fostering a skilled workforce and driving economic growth in the region. By providing valuable learning opportunities, Coega is contributing to the development of a skilled workforce in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 4: Inclusive and Equitable Quality Education.

Coega Encourages Matric Class of 2024 to Strive for Excellence

24 October 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

This week, South Africa’s Matric Class of 2024, including 94 learners from the Coega Maths and Science Programme (MSP), began their National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations. The Coega Development Corporation (COEGA) extends best wishes to all matriculants and anticipates positive results for this year’s cohort of MSP learners.

Established in 2013, the Coega MSP is a catalytic Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiative designed to help matriculants improve their Grade 12 Mathematics and Physical Science results. For the past 10 years, the programme has offered free classes to successful applicants, to improve their chances of university admission to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

Mr. Eldon September, Coega MSP Facilitator, shared his message of support for the Class of 2024 who are scheduled to write their examinations in early November 2024.

“As you embark on your final exams, remember that your hard work and dedication throughout the year have prepared you well. Stay focused, believe in yourselves, and draw strength from the knowledge and skills you have acquired through the programme. We are confident in your abilities and wish you all the best as you strive for academic excellence.

Our mission is rooted in the belief that education is a powerful catalyst for unlocking a world of opportunities. As facilitators, we strive to not only impart knowledge but to also inspire and motivate learners, guiding them towards a future where their aspirations are within reach,” said Mr. September.

The Coega MSP aims to bridge the gap between the supply and demand of critical but scarce STEM skills. By transforming young lives and providing hope to underprivileged learners, the programme contributes to enhancing academic achievement in line with Coega’s vision to be a leading catalyst for the championing of socio-economic development.

Current MSP learner, Hlumelo Fana (19) from Motherwell, expressed his feelings about his final exams, and his hopes for the future.

“I have a sense of calmness that has come from the progress I have made this year due to being a Coega Maths and Science Programme student, but I do have a bit of anxiety, which is normal, I guess. I am preparing to get distinctions for both subjects, as I achieved 96% for Mathematics and 90% for Physics in September. I am hoping to achieve these remarkable results even in my final exams, which seems realistic because of the knowledge and skills that I have learned throughout the year.

I have received so much support from the facilitators, not only academically but with hope and a fresh perspective on these two crucial subjects. I want to become a neurologist, and I would have to study medicine next year at Nelson Mandela University, ” he said. Coega MSP alumnus, Limpho Fadane (19), who successfully completed the Programme last year, shared words of encouragement with current MSP learners.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt best wishes to the Matric Class of 2024. Remember, it is possible to achieve great things with hard work and determination. Work hard, don’t lose hope, and this is a better opportunity to give it your all and strive for great results. I joined the Coega Maths and Science Programme with low marks, but through dedication and perseverance, I secured 86% in Mathematics and 77% in Physical Science. I am now pursuing Electronics Engineering at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.”

Coega remains steadfast in its dedication to nurturing the new generation of STEM professionals who will contribute to the growth and development of South Africa. To date, the Coega MSP has nurtured over 1000 future innovators and fostered educational excellence in STEM fields.

“Through our unwavering commitment and efforts, we are confident that we will once again achieve a remarkable 100% pass rate for the third consecutive year. This exceptional achievement underscores the exceptional outcomes of our Maths and Science Programme.

We wish the Matric Class of 2024 all the best in securing their desired tertiary courses and paving the way for successful careers,” concluded Mr. September.

Dr. Asabonga Mngeni, Environmental and Development Lecturer, expressed his sincere gratitude on behalf of WSU.

“As universities, we have a responsibility to review and refresh our programmes every three years. Since initiating our partnership with Coega in 2019, we have been fortunate to visit annually, refining our programmes to align with evolving market needs.

Today’s presentations provided valuable insights, further enhancing our programme alignment and ensuring relevance. This collaboration has significantly enhanced our ability to produce graduates equipped with industry-specific skills. Our partnership with Coega fosters pride in our institution, knowing our graduates are future-ready. The organisation’s professionalism has consistently impressed us. Building on this success, I advocate for a formal agreement enabling us to send students for experiential learning, bridging the gap between academic theory and practical application,” said Dr. Mngeni.

A Call to Action for Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2024

11 October 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

As we embark on Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2024, we must take a moment to honour the extraordinary courage and resilience of those who have faced this life-altering disease. Individuals like Ms. Thembeka Poswa, Programme Director for the Eastern Cape Department of Education infrastructure portfolio at the Coega Development Corporation (Coega) and a breast cancer survivor, remind us that the impact of this disease is profound and far-reaching not only for those diagnosed, but for families, communities, and society at large.

Ms. Poswa shares that navigating breast cancer is a complex journey, one that necessitates unwavering hope and collective determination. The moment a diagnosis is received, it marks the beginning of a challenging path that tests one’s character and resilience in unprecedented ways. The treatment process is not merely medical; it is an emotional expedition that can be both physically and mentally taxing, involving a spectrum of therapies and support systems.

To successfully navigate this journey, prompt action, access to comprehensive care networks, and sheer willpower are crucial. Each patient must rely on their inner strength, often uncovering extraordinary reservoirs of resilience. Hope and faith emerge as vital tools to combat the emotional and psychological toll of living with breast cancer, enabling individuals to maintain a positive outlook arguably the most significant survival tool of all.

The transformative power of a breast cancer diagnosis leads many survivors to reassess their lives. Priorities shift dramatically, often placing a renewed emphasis on family, health, and meaningful relationships. Self-care becomes essential, as individuals learn to live in the moment and nurture their emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing.

My own journey with breast cancer began in 2011, prompting a profound re-evaluation of my values. My treatment plan encompassed not only a mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and hormone therapy but also a commitment to emotional, physical, and spiritual fitness. This holistic approach has made me a proud survivor.

This experience has reshaped my perspective on work-life balance. I have come to realise that self-care is critical not only for personal wellbeing but also for sustained professional success. Organisations have a vital role to play in fostering a supportive environment for affected employees and their families. At Coega, for instance, we actively promote breast cancer awareness and extend compassion and understanding through initiatives like our dedicated Wellness Centre and Employee Wellness Programme.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month serves as a poignant reminder of human resilience and hope, highlighting our capacity to overcome adversity and thrive. I have chosen to see beyond the diagnosis, and I encourage you to do the same.

Ultimately, breast cancer awareness is not confined to a single month; it represents an ongoing commitment to empowering individuals, families, and communities. As we strive for a future where breast cancer can be eradicated, the need for continued support in research, awareness, and access to quality care remains paramount. Together, we can foster a culture of resilience and hope that transcends the challenges posed by breast cancer.

The Power of Branding for Aftermarket Automotive SMMEs

4 October 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

In today’s competitive landscape, branding and marketing are no longer luxuries for large corporations. Small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in the aftermarket automotive sector can benefit significantly from these strategic tools, writes Leah Bezuidenhout, Communications Officer at the Coega Development Corporation, who recently participated in a panel discussion on How to Build a Business Brand Image at the AIDC Eastern Cape Automotive Aftermarket Franchise Indaba, at the East London International Convention Centre.

Vehicles have become an indispensable part of modern life, offering convenience, mobility, and independence. As essential tools for transportation, cars enable people to commute to work, access essential services, and participate in social and economic activities. In many cultures, vehicles are also seen as symbols of status and success. Given their importance, customers naturally seek trustworthy and reliable service providers to ensure that their vehicles are in the best hands.

A strong brand is synonymous with trust and credibility. When customers recognise and trust a brand, they are more likely to choose its products or services. This is particularly important in the competitive aftermarket automotive sector, where quality, reliability, and expertise are highly valued.

To thrive in a competitive market, SMMEs must differentiate themselves with a unique value proposition. By identifying and highlighting their distinct features or benefits, businesses can attract customers who appreciate those qualities.

In the aftermarket automotive sector, customers may seek specialisation, reputation, or convenience. Brand positioning and strategic marketing can effectively convey these attributes using the most effective traditional and/or digital channels to reach a target audience.

A strong online presence is not only essential for reaching your target audience, but more importantly, attracting new customers. Establishing your business across various touchpoints also makes it easier for prospective customers to find, access and recommend your services.

Strong branding increases a business’s visibility and awareness, making it more likely to be considered by potential customers. A well-known and professional brand image establishes a stronger market presence, paving the way for expansion and growth.

Additionally, a strong brand can foster customer loyalty, leading to repeat business and referrals.

To effectively communicate their value proposition, SMMEs should focus on clear and concise brand messaging that is in line with their unique value proposition. This ensures that customers understand what the business offers and why they should choose it.

If your business values align with your personal values, adding a face or personal touch to your brand can also contribute to brand resonance and trust. This can be achieved through content marketing, such as videos and articles, to engage and connect directly with existing and future customers.

By investing in branding and marketing, aftermarket automotive SMMEs can build trust, differentiate themselves, acquire and retain customers, and establish a strong market presence. These strategies are essential for achieving long-term success in today’s competitive landscape.

Coega Concludes Heritage Month

29 September 2024 by Guest Leave a Comment

To wrap up Heritage Month 2024, the Coega Development Corporation (Coega), joined by the Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) MMC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Councillor Bassie Kamana, hosted an event for local community members at the Coega Business Centre, in Gqeberha. The event themed “Our History, Our Story, Our Heritage”, aimed to celebrate Coega’s profound heritage and history and foster cultural awareness, strengthen community ties, and preserve historical knowledge, says Dr. Ayanda Vilakazi, Coega’s Head of Marketing, Brand and Communications.

Councillor Bassie Kamana emphasised the importance of Heritage Month in commemorating South Africa’s 30 years of democratic freedom. “This month serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of celebrating our rich cultural roots, which have been shaped by our diverse history and experiences. By embracing our heritage, we not only honour our past but also navigate our path ahead. A country without a strong sense of heritage is indeed directionless, lacking the foundation needed to build a cohesive and inclusive society. As we reflect on our journey towards democracy, we must recognise the power of heritage in promoting unity, respect, and inclusivity,” said Kamana.

The highlight of the day was the comprehensive tour of the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for local community members, allowing them to reflect on the area’s industrial transformation over the course of 25 years.

Mr. Simphiwe Silwana, Coega’s Sustainability Manager, highlighting the organisation’s historical roots, said: “Coega’s history is deeply intertwined with South Africa’s, reflecting the nation’s industrial and economic evolution. Today’s event provided a unique opportunity for the community to reflect on their personal experiences and connection to Coega’s growth, while also witnessing the Coega SEZ remarkable transformation.

Our strategic vision seamlessly aligns with the principles of Heritage Month, as we steadfastly embrace diversity as a cornerstone of our continued success. Coega origins and growth reflect the country’s journey towards economic prosperity and industrialisation, which aligns with the idea of celebrating progress,” continued Silwana.

Coega’s Heritage Month celebration showcased the region’s rich history and its ongoing contributions to culture, economy, and society. The event reinforced Coega’s commitment to inclusivity and unity, underscoring its positive influence on the community and its dedication to preserving its heritage.

In attendance at the event, Mrs. Anna Bani (85), expressing appreciation, said: “On behalf of the community, we are more than grateful to Coega for celebrating this month with us. Having relocated from the Coega Special Economic Zone over 20 years ago, it’s truly surreal to witness the incredible transformation that has taken place. Today, as we celebrate Heritage Month together, our hearts swell with pride and appreciation.”

As a leading SEZ in Africa, a region’s beacon of hope, and implementing Agent of Choice, Coega remains committed to celebrating Heritage Month, leveraging 25 years of expertise and socio-economic development experience. This dedication reinforces Coega’s role in driving investment, infrastructure projects, and sustainable socio-economic development in the region, concludes Dr. Vilakazi.
