Aligned to Coega’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 13 (Climate Action) and 14 (Life Below Water), Paris Agreement on climate change, and in commemoration of International Coastal Clean Up Day on 16 September, the Coega SEZ Coastal Clean Up aims to raise awareness about the growing challenge of pollution on beaches and encourage behaviour change.

The Coega SEZ Coastal Clean Up aims to safeguard marine environments against land pollution, raise awareness about the growing problem of increased pollution levels on beaches, and encourage change in behavioural patterns that negatively affect the beach and marine environments. Targeted litter items on the day included plastic, metal, glass, paper, unrecyclables, and any other debris that may cause harm to land and ocean species.

According to Sisa Xabanisa, Coega Environmental Manager, “Hosting International Coastal Clean-up Day aligns with our belief that unity is the driving force behind meaningful and sustainable change. By bringing the Coega community and stakeholders together, along with the rest of the world, to commemorate the cause, we aim to champion change through unity. Hopefully, our collective efforts reflect our unwavering commitment to safeguarding marine environments for future generations. Plastic pollution is a massive problem for our coastal environments, and every small action to clean up is a big step towards making a difference.”

Coastal clean up efforts contribute to the preservation of both marine and terrestrial life by removing litter and pollutants from beaches and coastlines, reducing the presence of toxic chemicals, creating a safer coastal environment, and ensuring the safe disposal of collected litter.

Dr. Stacy Webb, Executive Director at Sustainable Seas Trust, says: “Our partnership with Coega is aligned with our goal of growing a network to create awareness and facilitate best practices around the conservation of our seas, and the management of the waste that flows into them. Together, we can create a future where Africa’s people and Africa’s seas flourish together.”

The Coega SEZ Coastal Clean Up stands as a testament to Coega’s fundamental value of sustainability and helps prevent the contamination of critical habitats, such as mangroves and wetlands, which are essential for biodiversity and the wellbeing of land and marine species. Ultimately, these collective actions work together to ensure the sustainable coexistence of life on land and in our oceans.

Ms. Mareleze DuRandt, Coega Human Capital Solutions Administration Coordinator, shares insight on her participation: “At Coega, we recognise the importance of corporate social responsibility and environmental stewardship. By actively participating, we aspire to demonstrate our commitment to a cleaner, healthier environment. It’s about taking proactive steps toward a sustainable future.”

As the developer and operator of a preferred and competitive investment destination, and a leading SEZ in Africa, Coega is committed to fostering a harmonious coexistence with the natural environment, as a leading catalyst for the championing of socio-economic development.

Stellantis Invests R3 Billion in South Africa, Establishing State-of-the-Art Automotive Plant in Coega

13 September 2023 by Guest Leave a Comment

Stellantis has confirmed its intention to develop a greenfield manufacturing facility in Coega in South Africa with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic). Minister Ebrahim Patel, senior officials from the IDC and Mr. Samir Cherfan, Stellantis Middle East and Africa Chief Operating Officer met at the Parliament Buildings in Cape Town to agree on investment in the South African motor industry.

“It is a wonderful day for all South Africans when a global company of Stellantis’ proportions decides to expand its manufacturing footprint in South Africa, to assemble completely knocked down units,” said Mr. Ebrahim Patel, Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition. “South Africa currently has the capacity to produce close to 700 000 vehicles annually. This will add considerable additional capacity, just as we prepare to implement the African Continental Free Trade Area. The country remains a great investment destination and this commitment from Stellantis to invest in our local motor industry highlights the success of our manufacturing sector policy, its capability and potential. We look forward to welcoming Stellantis to South Africa and sharing in the detailed plan for employment and investment”.

“We are delighted with the speed at which we are progressing on this project, thanks to the commitment of Minister Patel and the great collaboration with IDC, CDC and dtic teams,” commented Samir Cherfan-Chief Operating Officer Stellantis Middle East and Africa. “This project reflects our focus and trust in South Africa as one of the most important markets in Africa & Middle East. It is also the execution of our Dare Forward 2030 Strategy to reach over 22% Market Share in the region by 2030 with 70% regional localization of our sales leading to over 1 million units produced. We believe in South Africa and we intend to develop industrially and commercially bringing value to our customers”.

The manufacturing plant will be built in the South African Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Coega situated near Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. The greenfield manufacturing project is planned to complete by the end of 2025. The first launch planned early 2026 is a 1 T pick-up truck with volumes expected to reach up to 50,000 completely knocked down (CKD’s) units annually including export, in line with the industry masterplan, known as the Automotive Production Development Program (APDP). The plant will be predisposed in terms of space and painting to go up to 90K units / year.

Direct employment to support the first capacity step is expected at 1000 jobs. Stellantis will be massively investing in over 500 000 hours in training and skills to develop and support the local teams to the level of global standards. We are targeting a localization rate over 30%.

“The Coega Development Corporation (CDC) is enthralled for Stellantis to have chosen the proposed site in Coega for their Southern African manufacturing operations. Joining other major manufacturers in the area makes the Coega region the primary automotive hub in the country. The investment in the plant, employment, training and skills transfer will certainly benefit the region tremendously. “This is a much needed and welcomed economic boost for the Eastern Cape Province with an anticipated economy wide impact on the province’s GDP of R 664 million. Household income is anticipated to increase to R558.4 million within the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) and R577.4 million for the entire Province. Most importantly, an anticipated 1800 jobs will be created in the Metro and around 2 097 for the EC Province,” said Khwezi Tiya, CEO the CDC.

Stellantis continues to work closely with the IDC in developing a viable joint venture (JV) partnership that will be evaluated by appropriate credit committees. “Stellantis’ success with similar manufacturing plants around the world is well-known and our planned JV with Stellantis to build another greenfield plant in South Africa is progressing well. The investment is in line with IDC’s intent to drive investment that supports the development of the regional automobile value chain,” said Mr. TP Nchocho, CEO of the IDC.

Coega Serves as a Catalyst for SMMEs and International Investor Partnerships by Facilitating Market Access and Funding Opportunities

7 September 2023 by Alan Leave a Comment

The Coega Development Corporation (Coega) is emerging as a key entity in South Africa, acting as a conduit that facilitates connections between Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) and international investors. Through strategically devised partnerships, Coega has been instrumental in enabling access to market opportunities and funding for SMMEs.

In fact, Coega plays a significant role in bridging the gap between SMMEs and international investors, thereby contributing to economic growth and development. As a result, Coega has successfully forged alliances with international investors, creating an ecosystem that fosters collaboration and growth. These partnerships provide SMMEs with a platform to showcase their capabilities, form business linkages, and gain exposure to global markets. By leveraging the resources and networks of international investors, Coega amplifies the impact of SMMEs, enabling them to compete on a global scale.

Coega’s core function is to facilitate access to market opportunities for SMMEs. Through its collaborations, Coega identifies potential market niches and strategically connects SMMEs with large established entities seeking innovative products and services. By aligning investor needs with SMME offerings, Coega acts as a catalyst, forging mutually beneficial collaborations. This enables SMMEs to expand their customer base, enhance their market presence, and generate sustainable revenue streams.

It is crucial to highlight that access to funding remains a formidable obstacle for many SMMEs. Recognising this, Coega plays a key role in unlocking funding opportunities for SMMEs through its partnerships with international investors. Coega supports SMMEs in formulating funding proposals, improving business plans, and enhancing financial management capabilities. By providing guidance and support throughout the funding process, the organisation enhances the prospects of SMMEs securing the requisite capital to expand their businesses and realise their full potential.

In addition to enabling market access and funding, Coega places a critical emphasis on capacity building and skills development for SMMEs. Through various training programmes, mentorship initiatives, and workshops, the organisation equips SMMEs with the essential skills and knowledge to thrive in today’s competitive business landscape. By investing in human capital, Coega ensures that SMMEs are well equipped to seize market opportunities and sustain long-term growth.

The impact of Coega’s efforts can be seen through several success stories. For instance, a Coega SMME Development Programme recipient established five sister companies over a period of 16 years, which includes Mhlobiso Concrete, Mhlobiso Plant Hire, Mhlobiso Asphalt, Mhlobiso Transport and Mhlobiso Properties under the holding company, Mhlobiso Group. In 2022, Coega welcomed Mhlobiso Group subsidiary, Mhlobiso Concrete, to Zone 5 of the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ) as a Coega SEZ investor. Subsequently, this opened doors to new markets, resulting in a significant increase in revenue and job creation.

In conclusion, Coega will continue to serve as a vital link between SMMEs and international investors, facilitating market access and funding opportunities. Through these strategic partnerships, Coega should be able to strengthen the ecosystem, enabling SMMEs to compete, globally. By providing support in market identification, funding access, and capacity building, Coega can play an indispensable role in driving economic growth and fostering sustainable development.
