The Coega Development Corporation (COEGA) recently hosted 35 students from the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) Departments of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, and Hospitality Management, for educational tours at the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and Bluewater Bay Sunrise Hotel, in Gqeberha.
The Human Nutrition and Dietetics students gained insight into cold storage and fruit packing at the KHOLD facility in Zone 1 of the Coega SEZ, while the Hospitality Management students explored kitchen management, food safety, and general operations at the 4-star Bluewater Bay Sunrise Hotel.
NMU Head of Department for Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Professor Annelie Gresse, said the aim of the tours was to expose students to the diverse career opportunities within the food and hospitality industries.
“These visits will inspire students to explore the diverse career paths available within the food and hospitality industries. It is important that students know they are not restricted to a specific type of job at a specific type of facility, but rather, that they can find a place to practice their skills in any sector. By exposing them to various sectors, we aim to broaden their horizons and empower them to make informed career choices,” said Gresse.
The tours provided students with a unique opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, enhancing their practical skills.
NMU Dietetics Student, Geraldine Matsevire, shared her excitement to learn more about the various industries within the Coega SEZ and Coega’s independent businesses, like the Bluewater Bay Sunrise Hotel.
“I’m excited to see the various work done by Coega and also to learn more about food safety and awareness,” said Matsevire.
By combining theoretical knowledge with practical exposure, Coega aims to empower the next generation of skilled professionals to make a lasting impact on their industry.
Bluewater Bay Sunrise Hotel General Manager, Ms. Sisonke Mapuma, shared that the hospitality industry, like many others, is premised on professionals’ willingness to serve.
“A successful hospitality industry is built on exceptional service. Aspiring professionals must understand that their interactions with customers, whether related to food or overall experience, can significantly impact a business’s reputation and bottom line. This is why practical, real-world experience is crucial for success in this field,” said Mapuma.
In conclusion, Coega reaffirms its commitment to fostering a skilled workforce and driving economic growth in the region. By providing valuable learning opportunities, Coega is contributing to the development of a skilled workforce in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 4: Inclusive and Equitable Quality Education.
