Today, the Coega Development Corporation (COEGA) hosted its 5th Annual Educational Tour for 59 second-year BSc Environmental Science students from Walter Sisulu University (WSU). The annual visit, led by Coega’s Sustainability Business Unit, has become an integral part of Coega’s outreach programme,
demonstrating the organisation’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of professionals.
The comprehensive tour of the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ) exposed students to Coega’s expertise in various aspects of environmental management, including water quality monitoring and waste management. The visit highlighted Coega’s commitment to noise monitoring, demonstrating the measures taken to mitigate the impact of industrial activities on surrounding communities. The students also explored the concept of open space management to preserve biodiversity within the SEZ.
Mr. Sisa Xabanisa, Coega’s Environmental Manager, said: “Coega’s commitment to educational tours provides learners with invaluable insights, fostering a deep passion for lifelong learning. This exposure is crucial in helping learners grasp the complexities of their chosen field, cultivating a future generation of well-prepared professionals who will drive sustainable development. Next week, we look forward to welcoming a second group of students to learn and experience the Coega SEZ.”
The students were also exposed to Geographic Information Systems technology and its applications in environmental management and industrial development. Ultimately, the students were able to gain a comprehensive understanding of environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and the role of EIAs in identifying and mitigating potential environmental risks.
Ms. Zamaphemba Ntuli (19), a second-year WSU student pursuing a BSc in Environmental Studies shared her transformative experience.
“The visit was truly phenomenal and highlighted Coega’s commitment to empowering future generations with holistic understanding of environmental conservation, socioeconomic dynamics, and cultural contexts.
As for the experience, it was mind-blowing to witness how much advocacy Coega has in terms of environmental stewardship. Being part of this initiative was exciting, offering a unique glimpse into Coega’s innovative strategies for mitigating ecological degradation, conserving natural resources, and driving sustainable economic growth,” said Ms. Ntuli.
Coega’s sustained commitment to education and skills development underscores its impact on the development of highly skilled professionals in environmental sciences. The organisation’s dedication to inspiring the next generation of leaders is further demonstrated by its upcoming visit by 63 WSU Bachelor of Administration students on 22 October 2024.
Dr. Asabonga Mngeni, Environmental and Development Lecturer, expressed his sincere gratitude on behalf of WSU.
“As universities, we have a responsibility to review and refresh our programmes every three years. Since initiating our partnership with Coega in 2019, we have been fortunate to visit annually, refining our programmes to align with evolving market needs.
Today’s presentations provided valuable insights, further enhancing our programme alignment and ensuring relevance. This collaboration has significantly enhanced our ability to produce graduates equipped with industry-specific skills. Our partnership with Coega fosters pride in our institution, knowing our graduates are future-ready. The organisation’s professionalism has consistently impressed us. Building on this success, I advocate for a formal agreement enabling us to send students for experiential learning, bridging the gap between academic theory and practical application,” said Dr. Mngeni.
In conclusion, Coega’s annual educational tours play a vital role in nurturing the next generation of environmental scientists and professionals. By providing hands-on experience and exposure to real-world applications, these tours equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to drive sustainable development.
