An illegal strike that started this morning is affecting refuse collection in all areas.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality regrets to inform residents that an illegal strike by Waste Management employees, that started this morning, affects our ability to collect refuse in all areas. This means that no domestic waste, trade waste collection services can at this stage be rendered as tools were downed at our Uitenhage, Despatch, Motherwell, Struandale, Gail Road and Harrower Road depots.
We further regret to request consumers to either keep their bags until the next collection date or to make use of the nearest garden/landfill sites to dispose of their refuse bags.
We have put steps in place to deal with the illegal strike activity and trust that service delivery in this department will be back to normal soon.

Me thinks it is time we all band together and deduct the amount per day for refuse non-removal – it is simple enough to divide the number of Tuesdays (or whichever) in a month through the monthly amount charged and deduct only the amount for that day they did not perform the service. Eg: Refuse “collection” p.m: R100 divided by 5 Tuesdays in October = R20 per event. I am going to try it from end of this month for yesterday’s non-performance and see what happens…..I think we should ALL do it. Fair is fair I say. If they can willy-nilly have illegal strikes we are completely within our right to withhold payment for non delivery of service on that day.

Or the municipality could allow us to triple up the number of bags we put out the next time refuse is to be collected.
