The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality made the decision today to close the Bethelsdorp Cemetery to burials and monumental works, for a period of approximately six weeks. This decision was based on the same reasons why the Forest Hill and Paapenkuils Cemeteries were recently closed, namely the high water levels following the recent heavy rains, which make grave-digging unfeasible. Bereaved families who wish to bury their deceased in the Bethelsdorp Cemetery, have the option of temporary burial in the Malabar Cemetery and, once water levels have subsided, to have them exhumed and reburied in the Bethelsdorp Cemetery.
It should be noted that the public will not be charged for any such redirected burials: the Municipality will carry the cost for the redirection and the subsequent exhumation of bodies. Families will be charged for the final burial only.
Please note that the affected three cemeteries are being closed on a temporary basis only and as a preventative measure, as the continued digging of graves would place grave diggers at a health risk. Note that this measure is introduced to PREVENT any health risk and that it is therefore safe for visitors to continue to visit the graves of their loved ones, also at the Bethelsdorp Cemetery. The gates of the cemeteries are not locked!
