There is no denying that the utterances of Comrade Giraffe, Nceba Faku, has swung a stadium full of spotlights onto the four main protagonists in this tussle of the dung beetles – The Herald, Nceba Faku, the ANC and Port Elizabeth – please note that only The Herald and Nceba Faku are identified as the famous Addo flightless elephant poo rollers.
A long long time ago and in a suburb far far away I was told that the only form of bad advertising was NO advertising. The inference at the time was that even bad news would get you or your business to top of mind of the consumer. Popular opinion and practical examples have qualified that inference to include the need for good news to be interspersed with the bad in order to ensure longevity of the campaign.
Think logically about this – all the column centimetres, cartoons, blog and television mentions of Comrade Giraffes utterances have given this city massive marketing exposure. Many people will have Googled “Port Elizabeth”, “Nelson Mandela Bay” and the like to get a sense of exactly where our ‘favourite’ Giraffe was standing when he said his historical words. I certainly can see a spike in people landing on MyPE after looking for “The Herald” in a search engine so, indirectly, MyPE has also benefited from stupid remarks such as “Burn, The Herald, burn!” Dankie Nceba, dankie!
As a city we should be rewarding our very own Julie-Ass for putting Port Elizabeth top of the mind of tourists the world over. (Soon people will forget WHY they have Port Elizabeth in their minds. We all naturally believe that we remember someone or something for doing good.) Freedom of a coffee shop or Escort agency may be a fitting bauble, or how about a new license plate for Faku? Something like “Faku Herald” would fill a better niche than “Faku EC”!
The Herald should calculate just how many more newspapers they have sold as a result of old Nceba and give him a commission. AND they could sponsor the new license plate.
The ANC could easily get a company like Newsclip to place a value on the media exposure that Nceba has brought them and share the loot.
Every journalist that has written or presented an article should send Nceba a thank you letter for providing him or her with a perfect article to keep editors the world over smiling as they contemplate a fat bonus.
Maybe Nceba is on top of a new wave in tourism marketing – let him run people, we could be surprised. (ermm Barbara – just because he is running doesn’t mean you can practise your hunting!)
See what others are saying about dear dear Nceba:
