The alternative water supply to all affected Uitenhage suburbs is not enough after the callous vandalism of a pump station at the Van Riebeeck reservoir.
The alternative provision of water supply to Uitenhage suburbs is not enough to distribute water to all affected areas after the wanton vandalism of a pump station at the Van Riebeeck reservoir on Friday. This means that higher lying areas will not have water until temporary repairs can be carried out.
Parts of Vanes Estate, Strelitzia Park, Winterhoek Park, Fairbridge Heights, Van Riebeeckhoogte and the whole of Valleisig are currently without water. Water tankers will be positioned at the corner of Van Riebeeck and Van der Stel as well as in Daniel Pienaar Drive close to the entrance of the schools.
Vandals managed to damage the pump station while it was off during the repair of a 700 mm in diameter water pipe, supplying water to the garden town, on Friday. Security has been beefed up and a case has been opened with the South African Police Services to bring the culprits to book.
Unfortunately while workers are working around the clock to secure replacement parts to start the pump station again – which is significantly more difficult over the weekend when suppliers are closed and contractors unavailable – we envisage that temporary repairs will only be possible in a couple of days.
However if consumers in lower lying areas use less water, pressure might build up sufficiently for the distribution of water supply to the affected areas.
