The call from the Greenbushes community for a cemetery closer to home received a major boost when the Mayoral Committee, chaired by Executive Mayor Benson Fihla, approved a recommendation that vacant land must be identified for burials.
This decision followed after complaints that burial lots are too far from them since Walmer, Motherwell and Bethelsdorp are the only current options available to bury loved ones.
Mr Lindile Petuna, Executive Director: Human Settlements was tasked at the committee meeting last week to identify the vacant land within the proximity of the Greenbushes community and to start with the rezoning process so that the land can be used for burial purposes.
A recommendation that the Acting Executive Director: Public Health formulates a master plan for cemeteries and parks for Nelson Mandela Bay was also approved.
