Two Incubators Handed Over to Dora Nginza

On Wednesday 20 April local radio station, Algoa FM handed over two desperately needed incubators to Dora Nginza Hospital. The radio station raised the funds for the lifesaving equipment through their annual Algoa FM charity golf day held on Tuesday, March 1 this year.

Dora Nginza Hospital, home to the Maternal and Child Specialist Unit, delivers around 1 200 babies a month. Up to 160 babies are premature and need to be kept in an incubator for up to eight weeks.

Staff members at the hospital say the 34 incubators currently at the hospital are too few to meet demand.

“The Mangaliso Prem Unit at Dora Nginza Hospital is the only tertiary Neonatal unit in the area and frequently has patient numbers as high as 78 babies. This is 195% of the unit’s capacity,” says Dr Farhaad Khan, Principal Specialist Paediatrician at Dora Nginza Hospital.

To this end, Algoa FM and Pick ‘n Pay joined forces earlier this year to raise R500 000 to buy six incubators for Dora Nginza. Pick ‘n Pay raised R206 906 through customer donations while Algoa FM reached R70 000 from the golf day.

“We are so encouraged that hosting one charity golf day is enough to purchase two incubators and save dozens of young innocent lives,” says Algoa FM managing director, Dave Tiltmann. “We hope this inspires other companies and the average citizen to do their part.”

“I thank Algoa FM for their donation of two incubators to the Mangaliso Prem Unit. Their generosity will give the gift of life to hundreds of premature babies in the years to come and the gift of joy to hundreds of parents in and around Port Elizabeth,” said Dr. Khan.
