Fortuitously last weekend saw the Longhair and I’s plans to visit the dams thwarted and then once again I failed to crack the nod to visit the dams last Monday despite MyPE’s great exposure given to three of the instances involved in taking ‘local media’ on a scenic trip to observe the dam levels ……….
But, I do not give up and when our planned trip to Cape Town fell by the wayside this past weekend we decided to saddle up the old 4×4, chuck the four legged menaces in the back and drive to the Loerie and Kouga Dams to take a few photographs.
As you can see the images of the Loerie dam below are kinda boring – ja the dam is full, you can see some run off and pretty flora but that is it.
As a result we nearly turned back and went home to see the double bill of rugby on Saturday BUT you will be so glad we didn’t.

The drive from Loerie to Hankey and Patensie towards the Baviaanskloof is so very pretty – a bit like the land that time forgot. Turning onto the gravel road to Kouga Dam and just before the causeway we met that most unlikely of occurrences in a farming area – a traffic jam. Cars and bakkies were parked on the side of the road mesmerised by the strong river flow across the causeway.
It only takes one to show the way, though, as we observed a construction vehicle come from the opposite side and undaunted ford it’s way across the river eagerly followed by various 4×4’s who had now observed the safe route as shown. The Longhair and I dawdled a bit whilst the dogs swam before crossing the river and going on.
Boy, were we glad that we did cross the river as the Kouga Dam is still overflowing strongly and presented the most magnificent sight that you can see in the images below. As luck would have it I slipped and fell whilst snapping images and have been living on pain pills for the last three nights – aaah aren’t drugs wonderful?
