Ward 2 May-June Report

31 May 2013 By Ward 2

To see how hard working Ward Councillors go about their jobs, see Ward 2 councillor, Dean Biddulph’s newsletter below. You may contact Ward 2 using the contact form at the bottom of this report. The headline articles in the Herald recently are a clear indication that the recent shuffle within the top structure of the ANC locally has done nothing to quell the instability and infighting within the ruling party caucus. A visit on Monday this week by Derek Hanekom and senior ANC provincial … [Read more...] about Ward 2 May-June Report

The Struggle Capital of South Africa

25 May 2013 By NMB Communications

Port Elizabeth in Nelson Mandela Bay is the struggle heritage capital of South Africa prescribing investment in both the preservation of the democratization history of South Africa as well as infrastructure development to unlock economic opportunities. This strategic view was shared by Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Benson Fihla, affectionately known as Oom Ben, and Advocate Sonwabile Mancotywa, Chief Executive of the National Heritage Council, at the launch of the Liberation Heritage … [Read more...] about The Struggle Capital of South Africa

Red Location Precinct a White Elephant

16 May 2013 By Port Elizabethan

In the entire Red Location Precinct, which includes, the Red Location Museum, the Digital Library and Art Gallery, the only building that is operational is the museum. In the 2011/12 financial year R3 million was allocated to operationalise the digital library and art gallery. This is an insufficient portion of the estimated R10 million required to run both buildings. Nonetheless it was agreed that the following positions would be filled to ensure that the facilities could be opened to the … [Read more...] about Red Location Precinct a White Elephant

10 April 2013 By Alan Straton

If these, or any other questions on climate change, have ever concerned you, then you need to watch the global launch of Thin Ice, the inside story of climate science, presented for free at various venues in Port Elizabeth and George next week between 23 and 26 April, by the Nelson Mandela … [Read more...] about Free Viewing of Thin Ice – a new climate science film

Second Day of No Water in Sections of New Brighton

14 February 2013 By Port Elizabethan

New Brighton Water

There is still no water in the area in which I live (New Brighton Railway Flats) and the smelly situation at the Red Location Museum continues! I hope this situation will be resolved today. The Municipality helpline lied to me when I phoned them yesterday morning - there was a strike and workers were locked in their offices until late afternoon! See my facebook conversation insert below - where the real reason is stated for our lack of water. Our principles should come out and address this … [Read more...] about Second Day of No Water in Sections of New Brighton

Global Building of the Year 2012 – Red Location Museum Art Gallery – Behind the Award

13 December 2012 By Alan Straton

Global Building of the Year 2012

The Red Location Museum Art Gallery was recently awarded the title of Global Building of the Year 2012 by an online British design magazine, Icon Eye - competing against the Lyric Theatre Belfast, the High Line Section 2, Teruel-zilla and the Olympic Velodrome. As a Port Elizabeth local I attempt to support local business as much as possible and am known to be pretty anal about such mundane things as beer, choosing only to consume Fanta Brown quarts as they are manufactured right here in … [Read more...] about Global Building of the Year 2012 – Red Location Museum Art Gallery – Behind the Award

Red Location Christmas Lunch

Red Location Christmas Lunch 2012

On Friday 7 December 2012 the traditional Ward 15 Christmas Lunch for the Elderly once again took place in a jubilant and festive atmosphere on the porch of the Red Location Museum. Approximately 1000 citizens graced this honorary occasion. Mama Majola and her Olden Age Clubbers - who played games with them and taught them some "keep fit” secrets – entertained them first and foremost. Vibrant and the elderly's favourite jazz music was played in the background. The Programme Director … [Read more...] about Red Location Christmas Lunch

An appeal for your prayers and support

26 November 2012 By Port Elizabethan

This sad story came to my attention through Bongiwe Rasi from Block 40 (the immediate surrounding community of the Red Location Museum/Precinct). Bongiwe is one of the participants in the Red Location Arts and Crafts Project. Two months ago Bongiwe's neighbour, Nomonde, gave birth to a baby born with the brain outside the skull and Dora Nginza Hospital apparently sent the mother and baby home without any medical assistance, telling her that the baby was going to die anyway. The baby is … [Read more...] about An appeal for your prayers and support
