Generations of Jazz Exhibition

The launch of the “Generations of Jazz Exhibition” at the Red Location Museum, on Friday, 21 June 2013 from 19:00 is already fully booked. But, fear not as this vibrant new exhibition at the Red Location Museum entitled “Generations of Jazz” is a permanent one

Friday’s opening will feature local jazz artists from the New Brighton community dating back from the 1960s to the present. Sounds from the Yankee Brothers, Black Slave, Big T’s Band, Soul Jazzmen and the Metro Jazz Queens will echo in the Museum on opening night.

“Generations of Jazz” has been curated by Prof Diane Thram, Director of the International Library of African Music, a heritage archive and research institute at Rhodes University. It is the outgrowth of the ILAM Red Location Music History Project which has been conducted since 2009 in partnership with the Red Location Museum.

The Project components included research in the form of oral history interviews and outreach and education that involved bi-monthly workshops with veteran jazz artists teaching aspiring young musicians. This culminated in the Jazz Heritage Concert held 27 March 2010 at the Nangoza Jebe Hall showcasing three generations of local musicians. The Project produced a documentary DVD of the concert that will be available for purchase at the opening event.

The Generations of Jazz Exhibition and the catalogue that accompanies it are intended to return to the community the wealth of information gathered through the Project from its inception in 2009 until now.
